ISP Limiting Bandwidth
« on: December 08, 2006, 09:30:26 pm »
I have been a user of WinMX for 6 years now and without a doubt its the best P2P about.
I changed my ISP to TalkTalk earlier this year as they where offering a good deal. The first month or 2 was fine and then my grace period was over and I was locked into the contract and they started to limit bandwidth on P2P. They have told me that they do not block ports but network control stop P2P programs.
I can connect search and download on a secondary connection but the max download speed is 5 k/s
Feels like being back on 56k modem.
My question is, is there anyway around there control ?

WinMX v3.54 beta 4 patch operational
Windows XP
Wireless modem router all ports setup to allow WinMX
McAffe Firewall
Windows Firewall OFF

If theres any more information you need please let me know
If anyone can help I would be very very happy and grateful I do not want to stop using WinMX

There is virtually no way out of that control.
Change your ISP. That's the best solution to the problem

Cheers :P

Thanks for your reply all though its not good news you make me think there is a way.
How do they know at network control its P2P traffic, is there a way I can disguise my connection to get around this.
When im downloading from friends in MSN messenger or from a server on the web its fine full bandwidth.

Winmx connects to the peercaches and the primaries  with some standard protocols. So basicially, they have programs that will scan for those bit's of data and then it will block the program.
It won't happen with msn as it's not  p2p. as simple as that.

Only by changing the protocol can the filters be dodged, but since the authors of winmx have not released it's source code and have stopped it's development, that option is ruled out.

Cheers :P

Andy,

I too am with Talk Talk and feel sure that for the past few weeks they have been thottling on P2P. NOthing you or I can do but give them the boot. As to where we can go I do not know, perhaps someone here can tell us of a good UK ISP.

We recently signed back up with BT but not the residential accounts or dept.  Call the Business line or look at the site.. The package we have only costs £5 more then the s*tty one we had on bulldog.

Basically its this

About £27/month for truely unlimited Broadband DSL up to 8meg line.   We love it :D and I know a few other users here in the UK that are also loving it.

Be sure you dont talk to the Residential folks they act like your signing up for a different ISP when you talk about the business accounts.. lol
