winmx just stops working - hanging application

I have xp(sp2) with all updates installed last week. Monitor was working just fine for 2-3 days. All of a sudden, the program started to "hang" and I have to cntl-alt-del to shut it down. So far I have tried to uninstall and reinstall several versions of winmx, reninstalled mxmonitor, deleted files I added to download for the day just before i started having the problem and the problem persists. I have reduced the number of incomplete files(did not make a difference)

When I first start start winmx, it works great for 5 to 10 minutes, then hangs.

I am out of ideas.... can anyone help ??

Hi Beebleflang,
i can think of two things as test's,
1, system restore back to a point before the windows updates if you think they are the problem, because sometimes they are
2, some pc's dont like monitor, mine sometimes wants to close monitor by itself, others it just hangs, so try running WinMX without MXMonitor to see if it still hangs.

The xp install was a new program on a new hard drive... but I tried the restore anyway and it did not make a difference.

I also have tried to run wimnx without monitor and the same thing happens - program hangs.

Thanx for the ideas - I am hoping it is something really stupid and somone else will recognize what I am doing wrong... B the way, I have been using winmx for several years and this is the first time I have had problems.

try running the system file checker in xp, sometimes install appears to complete but installs windows with errors

thanx bearded wonder - tried the file checker - still having the same issue - winmx loads and i can upload and download... then program freezes.... Everything else on computer works great

have you looked in the event viewer to see if it gives any clues why?

Does you cpu utilisation stay at 100 when it hangs?

Also you don't by any chance use Peer Guardian do you?
If you do, untinstall Pg. When you use the dll patch, you don't need it.

Bearded Blunder(sorry about getting your name wrong) - will check event viewer next time I try to use program

SamSeeSam - yes, the cpu gauge in task manager pops up to 100% and stays there... and anything else running at that time stops responding until I end winmx  -- and I am not using PG with the patched versions

I really appreciate all the help and ideas - sooner or later I hope to get this fixed..

when you looked in the task manager, look for a program running that if i remember right is DRW or very similar to that, that is a program called Dr.Watson, its an error and bug reporting program that will start on its own, i found it running when 3 of my programs all hung at once, one of them was a cookie cleaner that refused to clean my cookies, and i cud not even open a window to "my documents" i ended the DRW program and everything come back to normal.

thanx to all for the ideas and suggestions. Never did figure out what the problem was, so I wiped out XP and did complete re-install without any updates, Winmx is working like a charm - must be a bad update.
