Openap Question
« on: December 18, 2006, 08:34:06 am »
With OpenNap protocol, when you search for additional servers to add to your network, is there a way to enter a search for a specific server, Gnutella for instance? I'd like to add that one.

Search in google for the servers you want to add specificially.
You can manually add servers but people typicialy do not make server lists with only one server

Oh okay. Is it that simple tho, isn't there a specific way to enter new servers in the WinMX Search page (initially, it did it for me automatically when I clicked on the Find .WSX box). Will Google bring it up properly so I can just enter it into the WinMX Search field?

>> You can manually add servers but people typicialy do not make server lists with only one server <<

I wouldn't make a server list with just one server, I already did the procedure to bring up random servers per the WinMX World instructions, and now I just want to add to that. I want to add Gnutella specifically.

Get the network name. Get the hostname of the server you want to connect to and then you can manually add the names to the opennap:
Click on the add button. Put the host name in the proper field along woth the port number and put a password and name (just anything except numbers and symbols)
Then you should be able to connect to the server

Cheers :P

Okay, I searched Googlefor "Gnutella Hostname" and came up with a bunch of gibbrish. I don't really know what I'm looking for which doesn't help. For instance, I got this -
java.lang.Object
    |
    +--seda.sandStorm.lib.Gnutella.GnutellaCatcher
All Implemented Interfaces:
      EventHandlerIF

Is there a "hostname" in there somewhere? Do servers (like Gnutella) have just ONE hostname, coz you said "You can manually add the NAMES to the opennap." I'm also thinking back to this comment you made a few replies ago -- "You can manually add servers but people typicialy do not make server lists with only one server."

I don't even know what the "port number" is which you say I should also enter. I'm pretty confused. Maybe I'll just stick to the regular procedure and use whatever servers come up in the WinMX "Find .WSX" search. But is there a way to tell if some of those results are for Gnutella?

It's just that I've heard real good things about Limewire (many search results for songs I can't find at all on WinMX), but don't want to get that program, I'd really like to stick with WinMX.

I am not sure how you reached the idea of trying to add Gnutella servers to your OpenNap setup but Gnutella is a completely different network to the WPN or OpeNap and there is no way to join it as you seem to be thinking :?

Limewire is a client for the gnutella network similar to WinMx but as it allows filtering of the contents of the searches it has fallen out of grace with many as this should be impossible on a genuine decentralised network.

Check out GotNap for a list of OpenNap servers  or downloaded a .wsx serverlist from GotNap here.

JJ007 Posted this in another thread so I have copied it here for consolidatory reasons ( yes thats a rarely used word here    )

Hmmm, this is weird, I don't see the latest questions/answers in here about how to specifically get Gnutella as an OpenNap server.

Oh well, here's a new one - With OpenNap I noticed you don't get the notation under the "Status/Server" column (far-right) re. whether a file is available or how many are in queue. Is that right, you can't tell if the file is available until you double-click it and go to the Transfers page?

Also, sometimes after I double-click a song to download it, it will come up in the Transfers page as "busy (queueable)", rather than just ENTERING me in queue automatically like usually happens. Why is that?

Right click the file and click on enter queue.
Personally I move on to the next file so I can't say what happens if you wait for the transfer to start...
But it will be a nice expreiment :P

Cheers :P

Problem is, once I GET those lists of OpenNap servers, I don't know what to DO with them, i.e. how to get them into my program and functioning.

I already tried clicking on the link given in the OpenNap instructions and got to the .wsx files, but then got stuck!

Well decided to have a play wid this openap thing lol, its never really bothered me before but while i was playing i decided to set up my own server.

I followed a guide available here http://freespace.virgin.net/server.guide/serverguide.htm

All i can say is that it was a interesting learning curve and their help was pretty spot on i decided to skip the reg with nap side as i would like to keep it down to a small comunity and my intention is to set it privatly but for you all here for a temp basis here it is open to you readers of this site.

the address is
tiny4eva.no-ip.info

HI. I'm back!

Never got email notification of the last reply in here for me, advising me to "click "Import .WSX" to import an outside OpenNap server list- thanks KM.

I'll try that too (I went to the "WinMX World Archive" actually to get more servers, via the link in WinMX's own OpenNap instructions), but in the meantime I downloaded OpenNap servers via a WinMX Search and noticed that many of the files that come up in those searches look alike, there'll be only like 3 or 4 different files, each one listed about 20 times. Am I right, are they all the same and I should only select one from each of those groups to download and import?

For instance, I'll see the following 3 files come up like 20 times each, under different server names of course --
PUBLIC 20070105 20070106 20070108.wsx      26,063 bytes
PUBLIC 20070105 20070106 20070108.wsx      24,845 bytes
PUBLIC 20070105 20070106 20070108.wsx      23,038 bytes

So, I only selected ONE file with 26,063 bytes, and ONE with 24,845 bytes, etc - Right? Just like with songs, when 2 have the same # of bytes you pretty much know you're looking at 2 exact same versions of the same song, downloaded and shared by multiple users.
