winmx error
« on: January 02, 2007, 05:42:14 am »
hi
i am having a particular error that i did not find any info about in a search on this forum
[hope i am not the only one]

the error is:
A small window pops up with a msg in it that says:
Winmx has encountered an error and has to close...

There seems to be no way around this but to close winmx and restart.  This is a problem if you are hosting a room, and a general pain if you are just dld.

Any solution or modification to system or winmx program that will take care of this problem?

Can anyone tell me if it is Windows XP  or winmx that is causing this to occur.

P4 2.4GHz  1.0 mb ram   WinXP SP2

thank you

Hi Dabud, can you tellme what anti virus your running ?

There have been a few cases of the encrypted settings dat file being trashed as a false positive, the solution is to ensure your fully up to date with the latest AV update.

Failing that my general solution is to delete the entire winmx folder in program files and reinstall again from scratch ,

this has proved to fix many small annoyances and may be of help to you also, lets us know how you get on.

ty ghostship for answer

I am running AVG 7.5, AVG Anti-Spyware and Sygate 5.6.
All are updated on a continual online basis.
I will take your suggestion and reinstall Winmx as it has been awhile since I have done that.
If however you think that one of my protection programs may be at fault, pls can you direct
me to more info on that subject.
This  "winmx has encountered an error..." problem is listed in a google search, but no definitive
answers/solutions have been found. [according to my searches]

thank you

I did as suggested and reinstalled winmx, but problem keeps reoccuring.
The uninstall included a search for any winmx files, after uninstall and i also went into regedit and deleted any references to winmx there before I reinstalled.  I did not use any old files [lib4.dat, library.dat, settings.dat] but started fresh.

Is there any way one can tell if this error is a wimx generated or windows [xp sp2] generated?
Any help would be appreciated.
thank you

I think it can be because your Av is blocking some file of winmx or something....
Enlist the whole winmx folder as an exception or something. just exclude the winmx folder and winmx folder only.
Also anothe suggestion, try running winmx with your firewall and antivirus shut.
Do this only on a temporary basis and see if the error reoccurs.
If ye, then it's not either of them.
If it does not occur, then enable them one by one and see the application which causes the problem

Remember please:
If it the error still occurs after disabling the AV and firewall, then they are not the problem and do not forget to reenable them.

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

it could be other software you have in the background also running at the root of the problem (most likely) as it's an uncommon issue, wheras xp sp2 & avg is a common combination, if either of those were at the root of it we'd see many ppl here & in the help room with this problem, the difficulty is isolatiing what software is conflicting, probably by systematically not running stuff till the problem goes away, if the cause can be found possibly a solution can be found also

Lets not also forget what one fake file could be doing..

If you have any incomplete files esp video types then please get them set aside..

Right click them all and choose 'Find Sources N'  and Auto Enter Que N

then click the Clear Incompletes button.. then run WinMX like this for a time and see if it continues.. its the most common reason for WinMX Crashing errors now..

If this seems to have fixed it .. re add your incompletes on at a time and let MX run.. changing that files settings back to Auto Find Sources 10min and Auto Enter Que 50 or 100.. then allow things to fun.. if you crash you have found the culprit...and you can delete it
