Another Person Arrested For Kiddy Pics In WinMX

An assistant referee for a boys soccer league pleaded guilty yesterday in federal court to a child pornography charge filed as part of an international Homeland Security Internet undercover investigation.

Giovanni L. Canapino, a college student living with his parents in Kapolei, entered the plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Kurren.

Canapino faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael Seabright at 1 p.m. May 14.

Canapino was one of 27 people -- 13 in the United States -- who were charged last March for processing, receiving, distributing and manufacturing child pornography. Fourteen others were charged in Australia, Canada and Britain.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Larry Tong said yesterday at Canapino's hearing that the investigation began in Chicago and was conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Child Exploitation/Cyber Crimes Division of the Department of Homeland Security.

The results of the 10-month investigation was announced by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in March 2006.

Canapino told Kurren that in March 2006, he downloaded onto his computer images that he knew were child pornography.

"I knew it was illegal," said Canapino.

Tong said 3,000 still images and 100 videos were seized from Canapino's Kapolei home. Federal agents seized Canapino's computer hard drive and CDs with images depicting child pornography.

After his arrest, Canapino admitted to visiting the WinMx chat room called "kiddypics & kiddyvids" to obtain and share child pornography.

Undercover investigators monitoring the WinMx chat room in January 2006 learned that a person using the screen name "Geograns 763" was sharing files whose titles suggested child pornography and the account was traced to Canapino's family.

Canapino admitted to using the chat room. After refereeing a boys' soccer game in March 2006, he posted a message saying he was "horny as hell" and that he wanted to have oral sex with the boys.

Government lawyers also argued that a "disturbing feature" of the chat room was that it featured live broadcasts of adult moderators sexually molesting children, and participants like Canapino were viewing them.

This new news is in fact old news, the room was the one investigated last year and its taken this long to get those arrested to court.

The winmx community contacted the authorities and they acted thats how its supposed to turn out.

There is no possible way to read someone elses pm's, unless you are viewing their computer through a vnc like program, or you are km and can come up with a thing like that. lol

I presume they tracked down the visitors of the room.
Anyways, why bother with winmx? msn can be good enough, not to mention perhaps emails as well.
Plus I think that the biggest problem is that who is going to read the messages even if they did decode them...
Not to mention the fact that they will have to break privacy laws as well....

Why don't police just set up a room, draw people in, don't offer files themselves but allow others to come in and offer, monitor all of the activity of offering and receiving, and then use the information to make a large bust like a long-time-invested sting operation? I have never visited a WinMX chatroom, but if the network is anything like IRC, no matter what is being offered legal or illegal they would draw people in.

1.> Most kiddie porn departments already have short staff and are underfunded. This was something I read about 3-4 months in reader's digest...

2.> The idea is kind of good. but typicially, it's much more useful to be on msn, yahoo....etc chatrooms where paedeophiles always lurk. they typicially, talk to them make them comfertable, and after the kids  trust them, .... you know the rest.
Polce officers, typicially pose as kids and when some guy talks to them, etc they track down their IP's and all. Not all Ip's only the ones of those who are clearly bent on causing harm. 

3.> If they are on winmx, the people who share such files can easily track down their ip's of all the users in the police room. So they will be on their guard  when they come in.

It simply isn't worth the effort (in my opinion). Plus how hard will it be to move to mabye ares then?
It's much more sensible to be on msn, etc. and catch the guys before they can do further damage, rather than be on mx and catch them after they have done it.
