A newbie who could use some help, please...
« on: February 28, 2007, 04:58:43 am »
Hi all,

I posted this in the topic concerning file sharing protocols, but just in case it isn't seen... Can someone please help me fix a problem I appear to be having with sharing my files with other people?

I've only been a user/member here for a short time and still don't understand more than doing a search and clicking to download. When I installed WinMX, I accepted all the defaults and said yes to sharing my files (though at that point I had none to share). I now have some files to share, and I assumed I was sharing with other members. I had one message from a guy looking to chat to women a while ago, which I deleted without answering (is this ignoring the fellow user?) and have had no messages from anyone since that.

Today when I came to my computer, which I leave on most of the time unattended, there was a message from a gent in the UK saying that I had ignored warnings and as I do not share etc. he will ignore me and so on. Now, if I'm not sharing, I am truly sorry for this unintentional rudeness. I've tried replying to his message - of which I think there was one as message and one as chat - several times, but he is either away or is ignoring me. The messages will not send to him and the chat thing did appear on screen but I don't know if he's seen it or not. I have apologised to him, as I do to anyone else it appears I've ignored, but truly am untutored in this program. I came across it by accident a while back and thought I'd give it a whirl. But, without intent, have apparently upset someone on the other side of the world to me.

My question to anyone who is prepared to help a newbie become more savvy is this: If under Settings/File Transfers/Queuing it says 'Maximum Total Uploads -3' and all that other jazz that you're all familiar with, no doubt, is there some other setting that I need to fix to ensure I'm sharing? Is it possible that this person has me confused with someone else, or have I been unintentionally rude to other users?

I really would like to fix whatever is causing this issue and share what little I have with others, but need help to do it. As I said, I accepted the Install defaults, other than saying yes to sharing my files...

Thanks for taking the time to read this - I hope someone out there will help me out.

Kind regards,
Caro

Hiya Caro,

I understand your problem, because I was much the same when I first started many years ago, as most of us were - no files to share, therefore people not allowing us to download, so "Catch 22", LOL.

There is a way around this, and it involves sharing, which is what this game is all about. We each should try to put a little bit of our own material into the system if we can, which means maybe ripping some MP3s from our own sources, or creating ones from, say, the radio, and then shoving them into our own shared folder(s). That way, some new material is made available for all to partake of - otherwise the same old stuff that everyone else has already input keeps doing the rounds, do you see?

If you can't do this, or don't know yet how to do so, then my advice is just to plod on, and weather the storm, until you've built up enough in your own folder(s) to share. Not all individuals are going to ignore you as has the person you mentioned, and I believe some of this ignoring comes from other programs some users employ in conjunction with WinMX, such as MXMonitor. The latter program, I understand, will automatically put someone on Ignore if it "sees" that the person is not sharing sufficiently - so having been put on ignore in your case doesn't necessarily mean that the person himself has done so. Once on his ignore list, though, the problem is that none of your well-intended messages will reach him, so he will never know. I believe, though, that it could still be possible to message him through a different server within WinMX, something which is difficult to explain here, but easy to do, once you get the hang of it.

I've been on WinMX now for a long time, but I'm still learning new things, so don't worry that you feel a bit left out at the moment. "Perseverance" is the watchword!  :-)

Hope this helps a little.

Best wishes.

Fred.  :-)

Hi Fred...

Thanks for your help, but it isn't that I don't have anything to share or am not, to my knowledge, sharing. I have done all I know how to share, but wonder if there's some way of checking for sure if I am sharing. In the queuing part of Settings it shows that I allow 3 uploads at a time and 1 per user.

My problem is, if this gent thinks I'm not sharing, I should be looking somewhere in settings or wherever to see for sure. I just don't know where.

Thanks again.

Caro

on the transfers screen it will show uploads at the bottom

of course no uploads doesn't mean you're not sharing, but uploads means you are sharing

you could always go to the winmxworld chat room and someone can look and check your uploads etc

chat room name is: WinMxWorld.com Help_A06F7657BABE

Hi Chuck,

Usually when downloads fail at alarming rates its down to fake files.  There is a patch that will remove those from your searches allowing you to choose from only real files and users.

My first suggestion is that you make sure your on the WinMX Group Patch, you can get it from here:

www.winmxgroup.com

3.54 beta 4 download is on the front page, for 3.53 or older go to the 'Downloads' link in the top left of the page and from there choose 'Various WinMX Versions + Patch'

Download and install and try for new sources.  If you still have the timeout or no progress report back here with more details.. like do they start then die .. never start ..etc.

thanx,
to be honest with you I got so frustrated after spending hours forwarding ports and installing patches and switching to a static versus dynamic IP   now my friends can't come over and use my wireless signal it locked them out. so I just uninstalled the program and returned all my settings to their original settings. But thanx for writing back.
