Pasting Japanese.
« on: November 08, 2006, 05:46:44 am »
I found something using the search feature. But, it's not working as they said. I can see japanese characters in my search, but when I copy japanese and paste it in the search box, it either comes up as alternate (and incorrect) japanese or a series of question marks. Can I get step-by-step instructions on how to paste japanese so that I may search for what I want?

You'll need to paste text as Shift_JIS format. There's various word processors and such that can do that easily.
If you want to use Japanese extensively I suggest you look at Microsoft's Global IME at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=803A623E-C311-4591-A593-B0E24A6F38E8

If you only want an occational search in Japanese I suggest you get either NJStar Japanese Word Processor or JWPce.

NJStar: http://njstar.com/njstar/japanese/  A trial version only, but it goes forever.
JWPce: http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/jwpce.html Completely free but not quite as easy to use as NJStar imo.

Again, be sure to copy and paste as Shift_JIS, not Unicode or EUC_JIS or NEW_JIS.

As a warning you may run into trouble downloading if you don't have Japanese text services enabled. Japanese uses characters that cannot normally be used in filenames under english windows such as | ? / < and >. So if you come across an error like "could not find file <whatever>" or "could not create <whatever>" then you'll have to enable Japansese as the default non-unicode language. It's not a overly common problem since only a few specific characters use them so may not even be an issue, but it is for some files so I mention it.

If you are using Windows XP, you will need to install files for East Asian language and set the Language for non-Unicode programs in "Regional and Language Options" (located in control panel, classic view) to solve those issues.

In Windows 2000 you'll have to install the Japanese IME.

For the filenames you can also use "Manually Resume" (instead of download) then browse for file to resume from and enter a new filename (it will create it) - although then they will need to be manually resumed if you restart MX (as it won't add the extra info required to resume)

Okay, I finally got it. I was doing so much but I was overlooking exactly how to copy the text from NJStar. I was copying, pasting in WinMX, or copying, pasting in character map (and even under japanese) and so forth. Thank you. I can paste at last.

But change your winmx font to a fint that will support Japanese charaacters Otherwise, you'll keep getting file error 3 (like I do for some accented characters)

Cheers :P

Could someone please tell how to be sure to copy and paste as Shift_JIS?

What is Shift_JIS?

I am sorry, but I have installed NJStar in my WinXP, and when I pasted it in winMX, the text becames blank.
I have chosen to copy the text as SHift_JS.

you have to set your computer to Shift_JIS as well - basically the character set winmx uses (and therefore the characters that you can actually use in winmx) is set to whatever your computer is set to, so you have to set your computer to default to Japanese in order to use japanese characters in winmx (this won't change the language of everything on your system or anything, just the character set used)
