hi all,

how do you manually add someone else into your hotlist?

is there more than one way to do this?

thanks.

Right click the person's name and click add to hotlist.
But you cannot add someone's name permenantly in winmx. But you can permenantly add names in opennap

Cheers :P

Why are there little things i WinMX that don't work?  Like permanently adding someone to your hotlist or giving someone bandwidth priority and things like that?  Will these things be fixed and is there any timeline for that?  Thanks.

You can add people to hotlists. But to add them permenantly, you need to use openap. So only opennap has the ability to add users permenantly.
The option of giving someone bandwidth priority comes only when you  throttle your uploads.

The reason you can't manually add someone to the hotlist is how the network is made up. Every time a user connects to the network, they get a new ID, and get connected to a new node on WinMX. That means you can't contact the user from the old ID that you added. If this was possible, then this feature would have been in MX a long time ago :)

On opennap you can add any user you like. This is because you are always connected to the same opennap server, with the same username, since there is only one central server.

Before frontcode pulled the plug, they told us they were going to redesign the WPNP and give MX the option to add users permanently. Unluckily MX got shut down by the RIAA, and we never got this update.

*Edit(sam) minor correction

actually its a good thing that you cant add people permanantly in winmx..............
for anyone who has ever been stalked you know how difficult it is to loose them as it is ,
to have a feature that allowed permanant adding of users would only be used for abuse by the sickos that permeate thru winmx.
if users want to add ppl permanantly theres always msn yahoo or any number of im clients avalable.
as a long term user of winmx to see a feature that allowed permanant adding of users would be a bad thing not an improvement.
while pie and those that support the access or MACROVISION,MPAA etc, onto the winmx network are still here then privacy should be enhanced not crippled.how long do you think it would take RIAA to realize what this feature did and simply starting adding permanantly all those that mistakenly connected to there bots..........not very long at all..............
and for all those that are currently pieceing together clients for winmx, unless it blocks as well as the dll does it will be a failure, and unles it protects peoples privacy it will also be a failure.............history teaches us lessions if we are prepared to learn.......you only have to look at the complete failure of pie to see that ..............

I presume that the existing features of winmx itself can easily tell who is sharing what.
Those chaps arrested for child porn are a good example of that.
As for the problem of stalking, I presume the ignore button is rather good enough for that...

Those folks arrested some time back where those who supplied or offered to supply child abuse videos or pics, they where located by their IP,s within the chat room environment, its not really hard to use simple network tools to start a download and watch a tcp viewer to locate the correct IP of the person sharing such material..

The reasons given in posts above that explain why the hotlist is not permanent are correct and in fact I would rather this situation was left "as is", in other network clients where a method is used for a permanent hotlist its much easier to be picked off by name/id method and sued as we have seen in one case where a user was sued on kazzaa because his name/id  matched one that had been seen sharing before, even though it was a different IP.

Whilst I always advise users to use their own judgement in what they share I am not that trusting of those organisations that are currently abusing the network to hand them better tools to do so.

Anonymity is your friend.

Hay  Y'all,    How do you send an away note on HOTLIST?  I notice when I thank people for a download they send AUTOMATIC reply.  I would like to know how to do that I think.  Thanks in advance --
