New user inquiries...
« on: March 01, 2007, 05:44:28 pm »
I am just starting up w/ WinMX, and i have a couple of questions on the topic of dl/ul:
1) Why do i always get 2 ul of the same file from the same user at the same time?
2) Is there a way for me to play incomplete mpg dl?

Post it in only one place. Someone will answer it...
1.> You can get that if you use opennap and connect to more than one server. Some people don't know that opennap does not support multisourcing... message them and tell them that it's wrong...

2.> Use a player called videolan from www.videolan.org . It has in built codecs in it and will play about any audio and video file you might want it to...
After installing it, to preview the file in question, right click it and click on play. Sometimes, (for avi files) a message pops up, this file is broken or something like that) and then "wou;d you like to fix it" click on no. (personally I've never risked yes lol. I don't know if that break the file, but with no, you can still preview the file)

Cheers :P

Austin also if your getting double uploaders of the same file and your not on OpenNap.. its likely that you have accidently shared one folder twice with WinMX 3.54.

If your worried this might be the case have a look here for details on sharing with that version:

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/sharing_on_354.html

A Few other good ones to have a read through here for new users:

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/transfer_screen_messages.html - Messages you may see in the Transfers screens..

If you need anything just ask away.. if its in the wrong place we will move it for you and not bite your head off about it so no worries..

Thanks to your reply, Me Here, I checked my folders and noticed that some files have duplicates in My Music folder AND in a sub-folder of that folder, both of which are shared...

A clean up is due...

Tx again

btw, for mpg files you should be able to just open them, no need to use any specific players or repair any files etc, you normally would with avi but mpeg is designed to be able to be streamed (ie. a player can pick up any part of the video and just start playing it, even if it misses the start and end)

You are right, it is with .avi files that my player has a hard time with.

I have another inquiry concerning Primary and Secondary connection.  I have read a bunch of stuff on your board on this subject, and am still quite unsure if i should go through the procedure (sowewhat lenghty) of trying to establish a Primary.  Evidently, the default ports do not work.  I am connected through a Speedstream 5200 (for which i have found details on the www.portforward.com site), but i am wonderinf if it is worth the risk, since this is sort of new to me.  I am familiar whit most of the concepts described, but have never actually proceded with any changes to the present default settings.  I did attempt ita couple of days ago, but got stuck at the 'Alternate DNS', which was not given with the 'ipconfig' command.  I presently am experiencing many disconnections, some in mid-transfers and some before dl even starts, and was wondering if a Primary would resolve this issue.

Thanks forthe help.

some ISPs don't run multiple DNS servers (ridiculous, it means you are dependent on a single DNS server, if that goes offline a lot of stuff will break, shoving a second DNS server on a spare web server or something would get rid of that risk at no cost at all to the ISP...) - just putting in the 1 will be fine (you are after all only using 1 anyway)... in many cases though you can use your routers IP Address as the DNS server, as many contain a built in DNS proxy that will relay the requests to your ISP anyway

you should set up the port forwarding so you can have inbound connections as it increases the number of users you can exchange files with (if you can't accept inbound connections, and neither can the other user, you can't exchange files at all with them)

once the port forwarding is done though the difference between primary and secondary is not really that big, you may find a slightly more stable connection to the network but it is unlikely if you are already using the winmxgroup patch (which typically maintains secondary connections for weeks at a time)

what sort of disconnect problems are you having? the connection to the network keeps disconnecting, file transfers keep disconnecting, or something else...?

Man, you guys are fast...  I usually get disconnected from the transferring of file, most of the time within a few seconds (5 to 10).  I have changed the time-out to 300 sec as was specified in some other query, but it doesn't even reach the time-out.  It is as if the connction was simply refused at some point, even though there are available slots at the other end... I also sometimes get disconnected in mid-dl.

Wouldn't a Primary also increase my search results?

you mean it connects (goes green), then disconnects?

as that sounds like it could be your ISP blocking p2p... the best way to be sure is to pop in to the winmxworld chat room and get someone to test with you

No, actually it disconnect from the user i am trying to dl a file from. But i think i am mixing up two different notions here.  Primary Connection and Port Forwarding...  I was under the impression that they were closely linked, meaning that I needed to do both at the same time.  Would Port Forwarding improve WinMX's performances even though i do not make a Primary Connection?

Yes. When you forward ports and connect to winmx, your uploads will go through more and same for downloads.
and, you don't expose or compramise your computer in anyway by doing so :)
Use a good firewall like sygate and an antivirus like avast and you are reasonably well protected.

Cheers :P
