Another annoying thing I have run across, but haven't been able to fix, is when clicking on any file in the search/transfer
windows, I get a system speaker beep.  Right or left click doesn't matter.  I make a point of turning off almost
all the sound on my machines, so I can compute in peace, but this one won't go away.  Not sure if it is related, but as
it is the system speaker, it could be indicative of a problem.

The options might be a little different because I'm using XP, but try this: Open device manager and click the "view" menu. Click "show hidden devices". Under Non-plug and play drivers, disable "beep" by right clicking it.

Sam, thanks for the info, but I never have them running at the same time, so that really isn't an issue for me, anyway.
Others looking to solve this problem may find that info helpful though.

Fun - yes, that is pretty much the same method as Vista, and it does kill the beep, but I'm a little more interested in why
it is happening, and hoped that might help someone on a solution vector of the overall problems.

I wonder if perhaps it isn't a problem with TCP/IP handling in Vista.  Even the (temporary) solution I detailed eariler is not a
satisfactory way to run WinMX, as the bandwidth fluctuation demands constant supervision.  Last night, for example, I had 3
downloads going at the same time, and they all suffered problems simultaneously.  When one would speed up, they would all
speed up, when one slowed down, they all slowed down.  For a short time, I managed to pull 150 down, but more often
than not, they all hovered at 0.0 during the course of the downloads.

Has anyone else running Vista and successfully using WinMX encountered this issue? The constant back and forth on d/l speeds?

hmm speaking of that...
I recollect this after you mentioned TCP
double click on the two computers in your tray(one that shows you are connected to the internet)
Click on properties.
You should also see another opetion called TCP/IP protocol
Over there, see if there is something called Microsoft TCP/IP version 6
If it is there, then disable it (Microsoft TCP/IP version 6) Leave the TCP/IP checked.
In my case, it didn't even let me open webpages with that option checked. on unchecking, everything was alright...

Cheers :P

Yeah, that had occured to me too.. disabling IPv6 and seeing if it made a difference, but didnt do a thing.

Also disabled the link layer services for the NIC, just to see if the mapping/whatever functions were interfereing
somehow, but Im still in the same boat.

I notice thought in the event viewer that Vista seems to try and refresh DHCP every 30 mins, something I haven't seen
in another O/S.  It did make me wonder about the TCP/IP handling though (and no, the DHCP refresh doesnt coincide
with the disconnect in WinMX).

I noticed the speed up/slow down on Counter-Strike: Source and other games, as well as in WinMX.  If you check your taskmanager you will find a process running, has a description of Windows Defender UI Update or monitor. Kill that process, and if you see the Media Player Network Sharing kill that too. Killing both of those processes seems to keep the bandwidth and speed stable. I can only assume theyre both doing something periodically.

I'm on Windows Vista Ultimate (x64) with an extremely high end rig, 4GB ram, Core 2 Processor, etc....

Let me know if that works for you.

Oh, by the way, I cant maintain a stable Secondary connection to download anything for more than a few seconds, however a primary connection works just fine for me.

WMDS- Thanks for the info.  Killing the Media Player Network Sharing seems to have helped tremendously with the bandwidth fluctuation.
I had already turned all Defender's processes off, after seeing the hits it was giving me in event viewer whenever WinMX touched the hosts file.

Well feel like ive ben reading up on this forever, and i found today that some networks cards are to blame for random dissconnects and connection problems. I dont know what drivers you have installed for your network cards etc, or if you did a upgrade but if you did do a upgrade its very possible that you only have a XP driver controlling your network card. You need to get the name of the network card manufacturer and visit their site to get Vista drivers.

With the amount of people that seem to have instaled with no problems it makes me wonder how many updated or just did a fresh install. check it out anyway, i was just reading about it on a site of no intrest but that popped up lol

Well decided to visit the netgear site to se what i could find and they have a vista section

http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101649.asp

All thier products need updating to a way vista operates tcp/ip.

Youcan see all thenewstuff has been updated but the old stuff has been dropped typical of netgear like but thats my router provider, maybe you should also check your router/modem or wireless adapter vender!!!!

Tiny.. Hadn't really thought of that, but the info from the event viewer
that I described is not really a connection problem per-se, as I never lose
the network connection, its just a strange thing that Vista reports happening.

The XP NIC drivers w/upgrade could be an interesting avenue to approach
for some people, that may be worth a poll to see how many are having problems
with WinMX on upgrades vs. clean install.
I did a bare metal install, and the drivers for my NIC were included in Vista.  I did
not think to install Nvidia WHQL drivers, and see if they would make a difference.
Because it seems to just be a problem with WinMX, not sure if the updated driver
will help, but if so, I'll post back.

it's not going to work without a rewrite to use a completely different base

IE7 made sure of that... same with RCMS (for the handful of people still using it)

...although the older bendmx versions will work (the ones not using ws2_32.dll as the filename)
