Should I be worried about being tracked down ?
« on: August 02, 2005, 01:04:44 am »
Should I be worried about being tracked down through my connection and being prosecuted for file sharing?    I am not a tech-minded person and I am wondering how they are finding people who u/l or d/l/ files and punishing them.  I am hearing 2 different things whenever i ask this question, 1 is that its impossible to trace through winmx, and the other says that they not only can track you but also have a record of what you are downloading and have downloaded since you began.  Anyway i thought u guys would be the ones that would know for sure.
thnx
 :)

Rest easy on WinMX Flyboy...

There are different types of file sharing programs, and there is some information about you in places.

WinMX is a Decentralized network, this means that there is no main server for all users to be attached to to get files.  You and I and millions of others make up this network.  That makes it a money loosing deal for the RIAA/MPAA to take the time trying to track and worse prove you where even on WinMX.
Because of the advanced (For its time) technology that WinMX uses to hook you up to another user only three places know what your doing, well maybe 4 if your not an athiest... You, the person your downloading from, and your ISP.

Your ISP is bound by privacy laws, which Bush and the music/movie cartels are trying to take from you as we speak, that protect your privacy online.

The reason other networks are letting their users get sued is because they have a central place that can get your ip and information about what your doing, that is not bound by the same privacy laws your ISP is.

So basically your safe here on WinMX ...

Well, I can tell you that more air movement is needed.  Its escetial, so the only way to do this is to crack the case...

Yes open the case to the pc and allow more free air movement.
Do not stack thing on or near the fan vents.
keep the tower in a cool area out of direct sunlight, if you have a house fan its not a bad idea to allow it to blow on low at the computer tower..

Thanks for everyones dedication to saving our WinMX World

Just an FYI:

My ISP specifically stated in a letter to its customers that they will immediately inform us of any inquiry. They will co-operate, as per the law requires, but will give me a heads up. My PC will disappear long before anyone comes knocking on my door with a search warrant.

Check with your ISP and see what their policy is.
