Problems with Norton 360

I have forwarded my ports, I have the operational patch installed, and I can make a primary connection.  However, when I try to do a search I never get a reply.  I think my TCP and UDP are being blocked by my firewall.  I am using Norton 360 and have tried to set a rule to allow WinMX to work but I think I may be doing something wrong.  I am using windows XP SP2 and have already set my firewall to allow WinMX to work.  I'm not sure what else to try.  Here is a screen shot of the rule I made for WinMX

 

But this is in the main screen for general rules regarding file sharing
 

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :wink:

hi Itsjustme,

Im not familiar with this norton version however in looking at your screen shots it does appear that its being allowed correctly.  You mention you have XP and that firewall is set to allow WinMX, I would suggest that the nortons firewall is enough protection and that you disable the XP firewall.  Im surprised that Nortons didnt already disable it. 

Double check that in the Control Panel > Firewall Icon make sure this is disabled.

Secondly do you have a router? or DSL modem (as most of them have a router built in now)

I checked and when I upgraded to 360, it did turn off my windows firewall.  I do have a router.  It's a Linksys 150N.  I used the tutorial for the 300N and was able to follwo eveything.  Perhaps I stilll did something wrong?  I thoguht I did everything correctly though?

Check your ports in the above link.
Also check if your router itself has a firewall (some do), if it does, then disable it...

Hi Itsjustme,

On your router when you forwarded ports.. did you also set up a static IP address? 

The most common mistake when forwarding ports is folks use the Gateway Address when makein the rules for WinMX or programs.

Be sure that your rules in the router are not set to the Gateway IP usually 192.168.1.1 

Im pretty sure Linksys ADSL routers dont have a firewall persay.. they act as one in general, so we have to make sure those rules you made in it are correct

Forgive me if I sound stupid but I am a noob :(  I did set up a static IP address by going into my network settings.  To check that I have the right number could I go into my router webpage and check the IP I have the port forwarded to and then do a ipcongig/all and make sure the IP adress matches what I forwarded my ports to?

I checked my ports with the link and found out that all was good with 6257 but 6699 was closed.  Can't figure out for the life of me why.  I thought I followed the instructions properly.  I uninstalled WinMX and when I re-installed I got this message below:


Not sure what is going on now.  Here's a screenshot of my port forwarding scren on my router



The IP listed there matches what I get when I run a config IP in DOS.

what is the make and model of the modem? that may also be a NAT router (putting you behind 2 NAT routers that need to be set up)

that UDP test doesn't work properly btw, it will show a pass if the port is stealthed as well as if it's open

My router is a Linksys WRT150N I am using the WRT300N instructions from portforward.com.  Now when I run the port test it shows as being open.  I chose a different UDP port#.  But reading the previous message that may not be true (that it's working).  Same problem though, I can connect but it hangs whenever doing a search.  When I connect to a chatroom I get a bunch of data but still never allowed to get results back from a search.  Still lost....... :(

I'm not sure what you mean by "getting a bunch of data" when you try to use chat rooms... you mean chat works or doesn't work?

you could just set winmx to not use inbound connections (settings> incoming TCP connections, set to unable to accept them, then the same under In/Out UDP) and run winmx as a secondary connection if you can't get the ports forwarded, although it would mean being unable to exchange files with other users who are also set like that

"Getting  bunch of data" just meant all of the rooms available.  I was able to post a message to a general chatroom so chat must be working.  I gotta tell ya this thing is really perplexing!

are you getting search results on secondary for the same searches?

if the channel list loads on primary then it should mean everything is fine and search should be working, as the channel list is just a special type of search
