Haven't used in a year - need reconnecting advice
« on: May 07, 2007, 08:22:57 am »
It's been over a year since I've used Winmx and I could use a little help as to what I need to do to start using it again.

I will have to make a secondary connection to the network. What patch or host file do I need to use? Are there more than just one choice? For the patches, what exactly will they do to my computer (please try to be specific)? I do not install anything on my computer unless I know what's being installed. Better paranoid than sorry.

I did see that there is:
Install-3.0-noMX.exe
ws2_32.dll
I know there was the PIEPatch but that looks out-of-date

I had been using the HOSTS file because the last time I used Winmx was prior to May 2006 and I was only online a couple hours a day.

I've got all my blocklists in PG2 and their enabled. I've got my Winmx monitor.

Anything that I've missed? Any changes that I need to know about? Trying to read through everything I've missed is giving me a headache.

Firstly. You can download winmx with the patch included >>Here<<

You are downloading winmx and the patch only. And that is it. There is no virus's or anything that will harm your pc in those files.

All that the patch does is connect you to winmx and gets rid of fake files. And does all the necessary stuff to winmx to help you have a better time on there. Neither of those files will harm your pc in anyway.

We advise you if you have PeerGuardian, please dont use it because it will be blocking youself from connecting your winmx. Please uninstall Peerguardian.

For more information about peerguardian please visit >>Here<<

For more help just ask

I think I prefer using the patch (by itself) without downloading/reinstalling Winmx.
Can you tell me what that patch does, what it modifies? Does it modify system files? Does it make changes to the registry?

I'm not sure what it modifies. But what i do know is that the patch from winmxgroup.com is safe.

You have nothing to worry about. The patch does not edit anything that you think it shouldent be. Trust me. It's perfectly safe.

Use the winmxgroup patch as they is the only one that effectively blocks flooders
select the version of winmx you'd like https://www.winmxgroup.com/Install-3.0-MultiVer.exe

Read more about it here:

Why blocking is needed: https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/fake_file_info.html

How to filter : https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/filtering_fakes.html

Comparasion between pie patch and the winmxgroup patch : https://forum.winmxworld.com/index.php?topic=3598.0.html

Uninstall and delete peer guardian. read why here: (look at Me Here's first post)

Any questions, you can ask here or come to the winmxworld helproom

if you go to the downloads section at www.winmxgroup.com you'll see a download for patch only for existing installs

the patch installer adds the file oledlg.dll in the winmx program folder

regarding changes to system files, it makes one entry in the hosts file in order for the update bar to work

regarding registry, in majority of cases no changes are made, in a very small number of cases the registry has an entry which would prevent the patch being loaded, in these few cases that entry is removed, i have not heard of a single instance of that change causing any problem.

if i've missed anything out, i'm sure km or someone will correct me

I have a file called olepro32.dll in my winmx folder from July 2005. Is that file supposed to be there, I'm running WinXP?

It looks like the patch from winmxgroup is version 3.0, isn't there supposed to be a version 3.1? I'm sure I read about it on these forums.

And I guess I should change my hosts file back to the Microsoft one, right?

olepro32.dll is suppose to be in your winmx folder it's the 3.0 patch. The 3.1 beta patch isn't available on the site no more.
As for your hosts file if you were using MXpie you can remove the entries left behind by MXpie.
The 3.0 patch also uses the hosts file, it adds one IP address to your hosts file for the WinMX update bar in WinMX.

olelepro *could* be the win9x version of older patch, or *could* be a secondary disconnection patch for the channel list, (i'm unsure of the file dates) the 3.0 patch is oledlg & the installer will also remove older patches... i still recommend visiting www.winmxgroup.com & either downloading winmx directly from the front page or the patch only installer from the downloads section..

no particular reason to alter your hosts file, the patch makes needed adjustments at runtime, though reverting to the standard hosts file will do no harm
