hosting chat room rules
« on: June 06, 2007, 04:39:41 am »
I would like to know weather there are rules covering the chat rooms .  If there are rules set up by winmx . is it legal for a room to post another rooms host's home address to cause harm to them.

Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your outlook for free speech, no one is in charge of the network and each room host is soley responsible for their room, as shown below.

It is of course totally unecessary and wrong to post anyones private details in a chatroom or anywhere else.

If you are going to sink that low, then you won't be getting help for that from anyone here...

Cheers :P

Sounds just like another Room vs Room war.   Next they will be spamming other rooms with clones and blaming each other.   Why can't they all just get along, lol.

hello sam see sam

I do believe in the right to free speech and have protected that right for twenty years in the navy.  Do i like all I hear , no, but i will defend the right for some to say it.  Now is there a responsibility for one who willing and knowling posted a persons address and threaten to spread a persons address wherever they can in winmx, yes!  That is the start of anarchy well at least in my eyes it is.  I will  protected the individuals rights, not to be harassed by a mob!  That to is as important as the right of  freespeech. Is it a fine line yes. should it ,yes. If one steps across that line one should be held responsible for there acctions. i believe there is a difference between freespeech and a individual using there position of power to threaten and haress another human being. They are trying to stifle and control another person. I f they are allowed to do this, this time then it gives them the right to do it to all who are weaker.

Sam see sam  i will still be in the chat rooms because i believe that this place is the only true demoniac place left around.  I do hope that it will not be allowed to rot from with in by ones who have the right to do as they feel and not be held accountable, for there actions . Freespeech YES. destroy another human being NO.

Samsesam thank you for letting me vent as i say winmx is a breath of free air .

Samuel Smith and LOL yes that is my real name

mick you hit the nail on the head  but i am not a regular in either room although I was a member of a room that both hosted with other host before it broke up. They are children in adults body. I say let them squabble. It will strengthen the the pack by weeding out the weak one. But there is still the issue of a host posting an old room members address.

I would defend, his right to call her a whore and a slut until i die, But to post her address and threaten to put it all the dating services. It at least to me beyond free speech

She has no recourse to protect her privacy.. If some freak would show at her door because  a host that is a child hiding behind anonymity . It is not right, that has nothing to do with freespeech.

Mick I thank you for listening to me vent .

It is not exactly black and white but the host can be prosecuted with enough evidence.
Namely, Ip addresses of the person at the time, screenshots of him posting the addresses, etc.
I'm not sure about it, best ask someone who knows but.
If the host is in another country, then the problem almost cannot be solved...

Cheers :P

If you actually own or lease the IP addresses or netnames in question then you can take action against the person releasing your information in many cases, if, this is taking place in your own room.
You can also have an injunction put in place to prevent the user from accessing your IP's full stop.

If you have a regular home internet connection, actions you can take may vary, depending on your ISP.

If this is taking place in someone elses room, and on a home type connection, refer to the *** WARNING *** you see everytime you enter chat !!!

micro: no you can't... in fact if the IP Addresses are yours then your identity is *required* to be public (IANA requirements, which are legally binding through contracts that must be signed prior to any ISP getting IP Addresses... although they rarely actually enforce the contracts, they can at any time) - you can confirm that by looking up your own IP Address... (although such a tiny assignment isn't required to have your details, in your case your ISP is being proactive - but certainly for larger allocations your details are legally required to be public)

but anyway, it depends entirely on how the information was obtained for what you can do legally, if you gave someone your details then there's nothing you can do about it, if however they obtained your details through some illegal means then there are privacy laws to cover that sort of thing in most countries

erm, and people can be banned from this site to, that has absolutely nothing to do with what they can do outside of accessing this site... i can't ban knobby from mentioning the name of this site to anyone just because he posts crap on here, even if we went to the extreme of contacting his ISP and getting their abuse department to give him a telling off, it still wouldn't stop him being allowed to tell someone the name of this site

for example you couldn't sue me or anything for posting your name on here, because it is a matter of public record, it's like george bush telling everyone his age then claiming nobody is allowed to say how old he is because that's personal information... it's only illegal to give it out if it was obtained illegally - however if you had obtained george bushes age after agreeing to never tell anyone how old he was then you told everyone, then he could sue you for it (although a court would probably just laugh at him if he tried that as that's an extremely stupid example)

The point I was making was in relation to 'general' abuse in my own chat room, whether that be dropping IP addresses or anything else I see as unfit behaviour, I am more than within my rights to contact the culprits ISP and inform them that they may no longer access any services hosted my myself.

oh and thanks for the refresher in the IANA guidelines for RIPE records. perhaps you'd like to teach your granny to suck eggs next

mrico

I as understand it, when as long as one posts in a room there is nothing one can do except plead the wrongness of it to the isp. I agree there but this postings were in the chat room topic of the day and there fore is displayed in the results of the search engines results.  for all to see all over the Winmx world.  I know that you would stop any one from posting your name and phone number with a statement that I will  will not repeat here. i think not .  I know it is always wise to not do anything in most cases. Things will right them self's, but not in this case any one deserves to be protected by all who can, because  the next time it might be you or a friend .

ps I do have screen shots of the room name and the topic as well as the isp of the host who did this despicable deed.
