never connects

Running WinMX v3.53 on Windows XP Pro SP2, on a laptop behind a Linksys WRT54G (for wireless) & BEFSR11 (b/t the LAN switch & cable modem) Have done all the port forwarding & security settings, all is correct . WinMX won't connect........ever! I've used it in the past, & it worked great , downloaded it today & can't get it to work . Any suggestions?

Not connecting at all is an indication that a firewall is blocking winmx. See if winmx is allowed in your is allowed in your normal firewall (if you have one) and double check if the XP  firewall (if you have a firewall other that XP one)  is off.

Make sure winmx is on the allow list of the firewall. If not, then put it in the allow list

Turned the XP Firewall off, to no avial.... still not conntecting.     now what?

Do you have any other software firewalls that might be blocking?
Did you get your WinMX installation from here:   www.winmxgroup.com      if not please reinstall from here.
Look at WinMX > Settings > Outgoing TCP > Make sure this is set to DO NOT USE PROXY, make direct connection.

A quick note if you're reinstalling to try to resolve a problem (applies to anyone)
the following approach is recommended:
go to add/remove programs & remove any patches listed there
remove also peerguardian2 or pg lite (they do no good on any network & cause connection issues on winmx)
look for your winmx program folder ( c:\program files\winmx by default ) & DELETE it
download winmx ONLY from the official patch site www.winmxgroup.com
run the installer you downloaded from there .. it includes both patch & all the ip blocking you need
