P2P Developement - Why No Innovation ?

Is P2P development stagnant ?

There was a time when it seemed there were dozens upon dozens of P2P networks floating about. Scour Exchange, iMesh, Napster, CuteMX, WinMX, FileShare, Gnutella, QtraxMax, eDonkey2000, FastTrack, EarthStation5, and the list goes on. Many of these networks have either died out or succumbed to the pressures of commercialization. Some are still alive, and surprisingly, still producing new versions of their software.

P2P development, for the most part, has suffered from an incredible case of writer's block for the better part of two years. This isn't to say that P2P development has ceased - far from it. However in terms of diversity, P2P creativity has been virtually non-existent.

The article is set against the backdrop of bit torrent market dominance, is it wise to put all our eggs in one basket or should developers make new networks, protocols and client features to ensure filesharing survives into the next decade ?

a version of winmx that downloads like bittorrent would be nice... kill 2 birds with one stone with that one; 1) no more queues, 2) no .torrent files (and the accociated websites) to fiddle with...

knowing my luck tho someone already did something similar in another client... :P

just about every p2p network starts out that way, then they "improve" with multi-source downloads, then they find everyone is always busy so "hey, let's add a queue so you don't have to retry to speed things up"...

it's happened with nearly every network, they they pretty much all still keep making the exact same mistakes

I dont think much has stopped, i think more of us are thinking about whats in the future, At the moment p2p is a legal mine field and alot of coders know for it to survive like the likes of ares thier programmes will need to passed as open source. An i know alot of coders who just wont do that, an are unwilling to be the brunt of a squeeze of a copywrite enforcing company, as no matter how you do it if you solely distribute it they will find a way of bullying you, An i know i havent got never ending pockets of money.

Its a shame but i can only say for myself i know im waiting to see what plays out with a few lawsuits knocking about and if they win who their baraster was :-P
