Downloaded video files either have picture but NO SOUND or sound but NO PICTURE

Can someone please advise if there's anything I can do  on downloaded files that have picture but no sound or sound but no picture (green screen).
Any help appreciated. Tks.

basically it's usually down to missing or outdated codecs, installing something like klite codec pack & maybe the latest ffdshow codec cures it

also, there is vlc player that has almost every codec imaginable built into it, and it is free at

vlc is ok if all you want to do is watch, if you want to recover space by burning the movies/clips to cd/dvd in a format playable in domestic dvd players (or even just want to watch in a different player) you still need the codecs...

so then you have to install them as well..

install the codecs to begin with & play video in your choice of player...

i'll leave which makes more sense as an excercise for the student....
