Unusual Results
« on: July 03, 2007, 09:02:32 am »
After a search, I'll check whois and it may say 4 of 6 available. But when I download I'll enter the queue at 856, or some such ridiculous number. (My settings AFS=10 AEQ=100) Now, if 4 of 6 slots are available, wouldn't I automatically start downloading? I went to the winmx world help chat one night and was told this is just winmx being stupid. I don't think I buy into this. Why is there such disparity between whois and actual results? This isn't a problem per se, it's not like I don't get downloads, I do. Just very curious and I haven't read anything related to this topic. It happens a lot. Seems like whois and ping are little to no help. I did read tutorials on search tips related to checking whois and pinging, but it seems like I'm wasting my time doing this. My solution so far has been to queue a file and then just click find sources now, winmx then usually finds more reasonable results on it's own from there.

I don't know ... this is not stupid or something. This is basically a user who uses a hack to misreport the          open slots for uploads on results.

Cheers :P

I have the new patch and searching for a band. A user came up with the song i wanted and it said 6 of 6 available in green. It eventually timed out waiting.  What's wrong?

mman Leechammer wont cause any files to 'timeout' either uploads or downloads.. its simply a tool to keep ppl that are not sharing from getting your files.

If you could maybe tell us if these are uploads, or downloads?
Do they 'all' time out or just 'most' 'some' ?

Could you tell me what patch you have.. new one?

Hi me here. I understand what leechhammer is. I have 3.54 B4 and the new reconnection patch for XP. The files that are timing out are downloads. Says connecting to  but they time out.

Thanks for your thoughts, but let me say it HAPPENS A LOT. This is not just one odd user doing this.  I wonder if this is some new kind of problem you guys may not be aware of yet?

Also, in starting this conversation, I realised if whois is not reporting correct information, and mxmoni uses whois to make decisions, then I may be ignoring people wrongly. I've cleared my ignore list and shut moni down for now.

I try to connect primary to support the network, and have read the posts about the new patch and peerguardian.  I stopped using peerguardian some time ago based on other posts about it from [me here], but I reviewed the instructions to set it up again. You guys should know the instructions still refer to adding block_lst.txt and not the new lmkj.txt I saw in another post. This can be confusing to some people... and of course unless you add the lmkj.txt one nothing is blocked.

People generally use that hack to get past mxmoniter lol
And people who use it are well aware as to how it is to be used. Same as you using mxmoniter.

Sam, I'm getting the feeling that you're amused by my post. If you mean to say there is nothing wrong, or there is nothing that can be done about it, then say that. I didn't meant to waste anyone's time on a foolish problem, this just didn't make any sense to me, so I was curious.

I never hacked any settings to "fool" people and I never set moni to lock sharers out.

I would suggest you come by the help room on WinMX and lets test downloads on a user we know works.  Normally downloads timing out are one of two things 1. Fakes which if yoru on the WMW patch released a few days ago then this *shouldnt* be the case as those results are filtered out. (there are areas or short times when IP are new and being added to the lists that you *could* see fakes and attempt downloaidng them).  2. You ISP is causing issues.
Coming to the room at:

Would be helpful to find out.

Hi .. let me see if i can clrarify this a bit..
What Sam is referring to is a hack.. meaning someone has made something (probably a settings.dat file) that will lie to WinMX for the whois.  You basically pick a file and think.. great its available .. go to download it and find yourself in a que of a rediculous number like your saying above.  The worse part is actually that many ppl have reported waiting and waiting and waiting on this only to find they get to the number 1 or so spot and get disconnected (by the users) and wind back up at que number 499 or some thing.. so What Same is saying and Im saying is that if your finding your self with these users .. No there is nothing you can do about them.. they are greedy just like the users using the knonwn hack called 0 of 0.  Its best to do what you said above, right click and choose find sources now.. and use those folks to get the files from.

Hope this clears it up and doesnt make it worse.

hack as in not you doing it.

Sort of like the 0 of 0 upload slot hack. The user simply changes the way winmx reports it's queue status, sort of like the way. [ The 0 of 0 hack allows a user to set the number of upload slots to 0 , so that no one can download from him.]

btw thanks me here for clearing that up :)

Cheers :P

Me Here and Sam:

Thanks, I didn't mean to get sensitive, just sounded a little like Sam was laughing at my problem. I didn't know you could change anything besides the built in settings, so I guess it's good to know that the problem lies with greedy people and not me. I'll just continue to use the workaround I already came up with.  This does happen a lot though, I run into quite a few of these, not just the occasional odd one. Why anyone would go to that much trouble is beyond me, if you don't want to share it'd be easier to set your upload slots to 0, but I guess you wouldn't get past the upload managers then. There is no accounting for some people.

The only thing thats not clear to me now is whether I should resume using mxmonitor, like I said I realized that it uses whois to make decisions and if it's not getting reliable info then it can't make reliable decisions.

btw, did you notice my comment regarding peerguardian and the older block_lst.txt? You should address that, I think it's important.

Sorry Chipster,

I did miss your comments about the block_list.txt yes.  I'd like to take this chance to appologize to anyone reading this about the confusion and conflicting advice regarding PG and the block lists for that matter.

Breifly, When the WMG servers were taken off line this disabled the auto blocking in the patch, and tho not idea PG ran with the list we maintain only installed is better then nothing in that regard.  Now that the new patch as been released with full filtering and blocking functions PG is again not needed and we will continue to advice against its use.

@ this time due to other reasons both locations do hold a full list therefor it wasnt important to change that information in the wake of other things i had on my plate to get done.. lol  I do appreciate you Chipster, i like ppl that notice details.. thanks on that.

Last note about the settings.dat file change. .the Settings.dat file can not be changed to 0, its impossible.  So long ago some folks thought 'gee what a great idea it would be to hack that and make it allow you to set 0 slots so you can block sharing files and still get past Upload managers like MXMonitor'.. great thinking.. lol   In any case the point is someone else has obviously thought to do the same with this hack your seeing.  Hopefully since those require you install them, we wont see too many more then we do now.

Again hope this clarifys things a bit.. if not post me back..  :P

Check if your ports are forwarded properly
Check if the internal ip which were used for the ports is the same as it is now... It can reset is a few rare cases
