After many folks where given an impossibly hard time closing accounts it seems action was taken at last  :)

AOL reached a settlement with 48 states and the District of Columbia under which it will change its policy on account cancellations, officials announced on Wednesday. The settlement stems from consumer complaints that AOL made it difficult to close down accounts

AOL, which made most of its services free last year, will pay the states and the District of Columbia a total of $3 million for costs and fees.

The agreement with the states requires AOL to let customers use a Web site to cancel their accounts or move to the free service.

Whilst this is all well and good the real losers out of this scandal are the defrauded customers who will no doubt not receive a cent even though many had money taken from their accounts even after believing they had closed their accounts with AOL, it really is a disgrace

Heres some further links from a forum of some guy trying his best to cancel his account
