Connection OK but can't download
« on: August 23, 2007, 07:11:42 pm »
:( Love Winmx and I've used it for some time with great results - rebuilt pc and now it connects but any uploads or downloads quickly drop to 0.0!  Looking at bandwidth shows a series of spikes and not the usual blocks.  I've run with and without firewall/anti virus and still the same.  Is it my ISP - I'm with TalkTalk?
Regards

Thats the same as i run on so there should be no issue there as this requires no forwarding i suspect it is your isp blocking or throttling
keep trying and see if you get the same results off peak or if it stops at a reasonable rate this will tell you if they are throttling or fair usage as they like to call it..... my own runs slower between 6/11 pm & at wkds)
if this is not the case then as you have tried it without firewall/security & ports dont need forwarding (as they dont in your case) then i suspect it is blocking and only a change of isp will resolve this
just one last thing try adjusting your bandwidth settings click on the link below and follow the instructions
https://www.winmxworld.com/scripts/bandwidth/
this will test your connection and give you a guide what to set them to for your connection
If you are realy persistant try a clean install of winmx including deleting winmx from your c/drive as now and then this tends to solve some issues

latest setup & patch combined can be found here

whilst posting this i have done a little research and talk talk "manage" traffic in peak hours & priorotise over p2p one possible way round it would be to change your port settings  by going to settings clicking on your incoming tcp settings and selecting a diffrent port number the posts i checked are a little outdated so they might have this coverd by now also.... but worth a go anyway just to check

here is a couple of posts from various locations i have unearthed about talk talk

At first they denied blocking P2P, but admitted it in the end, TalkTalk for broadband is crap, you only need to read ADSL Guide to see how crap they have always been. Thankfully they let me migrate out at no cost.
When I was with them P2P was 'throttled' 24/7, you would be lucky to get 1k/s mostly 0.5k/s.

Talk Talk phone service excellent, but their broadband should be avoided at all costs.
It's slow, constantly disconnects, DNS errors, newsgroups and email service often down, and they 'manage' / throttle anything that isn't web browsing.

Quote
Is anyone else finding that talktalk are severely limiting bitorrent and other p2p use? I can't download at more than 1k/second unless I try it between midnight and 8am.
ANSWER TO THE POST
Yes they throttle P2P traffic except between the hours you mention, they have been throttling the service since day one I'm afraid.

In a quote from talk talk customer services ( a joke all of its own that title)
Quote
Between the hours of 4pm and midnight daily we have implemented network controls which will prioritise web and email traffic over all other types. Outside of hours there are no restrictions in place.

Firstly this policy started on 25 April 2005, this was put in place in order to preserve network integrity.

Upon reading these posts and several others i suspect your problems lie with talk talk
hope this was of help to you
