No uploading/
« on: September 28, 2007, 12:44:23 pm »
I don't understand why ,when a user tried to download one of my files it is invariably unsuccessful.
I never had this problem before .Could it be that I am now on a wireless broadband network (100Mbps) whereas it was dialup before? My connection type is secondary as it won't work with primarary although I think I have a fast connection.
I am able to download alright -although maybe I have to wait for one good attempt in 5 or maybe 10.I think that is fairly normal isn't it?
But for transfers in the opposite direction it seems never to wook and I feel like a scrounger!

Hi Geordief

Yes that could be the problem as you will need to forward the ports on the router.

In your settings on winmx you have TCP and UDP these are usily 6699 and 6257. You will need to forward these into your modem.

To do this go here: http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

Find the modem that you are running and follow those instructions. That will get you working again.

Please post back and let us know how you go.

Thanks but I don't think I have a modem.
In Device Manager under Network Adapter it says
Via Rhine 11 Fast Ethernet Adapter
I can't find that in the page you have just shown me.
The broasband I am using is sent from a mast on the top of the hill and there is an  antenna on my roof with a cable  that leads  into my computer.

Hi Geordief

Ok, let me think. I have seen this a few times now. Ok, you can find out what a machines internal IP is by doing the following:
1.Go to Start
2.Programs
3. Accessories
4.Command/MSDos prompt.
5. In the black DOS box type in ipconfig for getting the ip of one machine.
Type ipconfig /all to get the Gateway and Internal IP of the machine.

Put this into your browser.... http://(number)

It will come up with username and password.

Username is = username or password
password is = password or (blank)

Ok once you are in you will need to go to al of the tabs until you find the section on port farwarding. This looks something like this computer addy, tcp/udp, port number.

Once you have done that and they are forwarded correctly it will work.

Oh and by the way the computer addy is different from the gateway addy so please make sure you write both of them down.

Good luck and please let me know how you go.

I have tried all the ip address that show up under ipconfig and ipconfig/all  but  the browser will not open for them.
Also if it is going to ask me for a username /password I think I will have to ask the owner of the network to sort this out if it is going to be possible.
So I will contact him and see if he can sort this out.

I have got an answer from the network I am with and it is that they  don't allow peer to peer programs on account of the bandwidth they need.
I can't see any workaround for this-but at least I now know what the reason is.......
thanks for your help.
