More Than 1 MX Connection
« on: February 06, 2008, 04:20:30 pm »
This may have been answered somewhere, but I've not been able to find it.

I have almost 5000 files that I am sharing, in about 3 distinct genres. Anyone who Browses my collection has to wade through thousands of files to get to the ones they may be interested in; this is especially slow for those who use 56k.

Is there a way to run 2 mx's at the same time with different identities, into which I can split my collection? I tried Plusmx but found it buggy.

I'm sure it has been answered, but I couldnt find it either

I've personally never used plusmx so cant comment on the bugs, I do however know a way of running 2 instances of winmx on one PC flawlessly on XP or Vista

Install WinMX to 2 independant locations eg. Program Files\WinMX\ & Program Files\WinMX2\
Open them one by one and set the ports differently eg 16699 & 16257 / 26699 & 26257
Open one on your standard desktop and then use the 'switch user' function to log into a different user account and leave your own running
Open the 2nd winmx instance on that user profile.
You can switch between the 2 profiles as often as u need, and if both Clients are setup as Primary this means you will be able to share a total of 10,000 files

I hope this helps  :D

Emulator made a program called plusmx. It lets you connect multiple winmx's and works good as long as you use different ports. http://www.emulator.netsons.org/page.php?p=view&type=myprog&id=12&lng=en

Thank you, Î¥Îî¢rôÎ¥Îꢢâ, I might try this, but before I do, might it be possible to do as you suggested, but keep it all in the same identity but used different file locations and different ports? That is, the one xp identity, two mx identities, two mx program locations (one called c:\program files\winmx and the other c:\program files\winmx2), and two different sets of ports.

The reason for asking is that I'm not keen on setting up an additional identity on xp.

No, it will not allow you to open 2 instances of WinMX natively, even if they are in different directorys

just one thing I'd like to add.

If you usually use a primary connection, then it's best that you keep just one winmx on primary, the others on secondary, so that you can spare more bandwidth for uploads and downlaods. It is not recommended to ave 2 winmxes on primary, as it can slow down your comp significantly

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

These are old winmx 3.1 versions. But you can run them at the same time easily, you will need to change the language as its set up as japanese or chinese of something but soon as you do its like the standard version. hope this helps seen as your only after a filesharing part and 3.1 is perfect for this. plese note when using chat it doesnt suppport colour but you prob wont use it for that when your 3.54/3.53 has better chat functions.

Sorry I didnt see that but if all else fails and you want to try plusmx again .. the part thats buggy is the installer. Once you've installed it you dont have to use that again, just go to program files\crystalsoft and theres folders in there .. winmx1 winmx2 etc and click the exe from there or make a shortcut. It's just like having another winmx without user switching. We've been using it sucessfully for sometime.  :)

Hi all
i've been running plusmx for some months now, i find it really good. you need to open a few more ports for it to work proper. I usually have about 10 runnung at one time all sharing uploading and downloading. Hope it works for you aswell as it does for me.

Why run ten? why not just open more upload/download slots on one and save your pcs resources for the uploading & downloading of files rather than running multiple plusmx

when you install winmx, if you add a quick launch icon & enable quick launch on your taskbar, clicking the quicklaunch winmx buttin twice fast should open 2 winmx's, then change ports on 1 and only run 1 as primary and other as secondary.

Thanks for these, LagerLout aka Tiny; I have downloaded them and had a look. There are 4 versions of 3.31, being ja, jb, jc, jd. Is any one better than another?

Thank you to everyone else for suggesting MXPlus and for other advice; I'm still looking at my options.

Now if only I could stop my computer from crashing every few hours.
