BT business line becoing completly un-useable
« on: November 21, 2007, 07:51:03 pm »
As a BT customer for nearly 12 months and the continues decreasing in speed ive finially had enough, i dont know many who use BT DSL service in the UK but the rediculos amount of throttling it is now hammering down on us is making my connection completly useless at peak time's. An whats kinda funny is this seems to be getting worse as this new BT vision seems to be getting more of a uptake.

When i started with BT i had these amazing speeds of 700k, and that was what i actually got. Now dont get me wrong i am far from complaining about that speed, for a DSL line that is considered a damn good connection. But recently every evening at the admision of a technical rep over the phone that they are restricting my service at eveings down to a measly 51k. Now i will at full admision declare that i am a heavy user of the internet avraging aprox 100gig each month. Some may gasp at this but hell that was why i ordered a BUSINESS line and not a normal home installation. Now ive been testing this rather novel idea of restricting my service down to 51k. You know a basic encrypted connection to a private server using a programe like VNC uses around 20k. Now my company is registered with them as a hosting company, and upon speaking to a manager on the phone telling them that they are hindering my productivity and my business his excuse was to grin an bare it and wait till the end of the month to see if im removed from this shapeing. Now dont get me wrong, that guy on behalf of BT got my full rath, my service will be cancelled on the 5th of december and i will be looking for the next provider as a matter of urgency.

But i dont see why a customer of almost 12 months, paying £40 plus the vat a month for what was advertised as a unlimited business package, and although this is posted on a P2P forum that is what it does, it runs MY business i think this is gross mistake on their half.

Now i know at the moment over the water that their has been so many complaints about a company that it looks like something may come of it. An personally i think its about time someone did the same over here, I may be a user and supporter of P2P, i use P2P but i use it responsibly. I start dls either on a timer threw the night or just before i go to bed, apparently that would be acceptable according to BT's shapeing policy that says it doesnt go off how much you download, but at what time you apparently download an may encroach upon someone elses service. Well here is one customer who can say that is shear bullshit, as i work all day on computers and coming home to carry on just doesnt happen anymore and hasnt for the last 10 months, my internet use and habit has never changed, but since the introduction of this new streaming internet TV im suddenly doing something wrong.

So anyway all i can say is if you was thinking about moving over to BT in the UK, dont be succered into its a business line, its all unlimited, because christ it aint.

So for the point in all this rambling i was hoping maybe someone else had these same issues with BT and wanted to moan with me. If they new of any sites kicking up a stink, Maybe a group to help me complain about the level of service i recive and give my probable ignored letter to them abit of clout. As it looks like i may be offline for the christmas period, as a new bill was far from what i was expecting at this time of year. Suppose even a provider who you have a high download/upload level and get very little problems. All nice comments are warmly recived to ease my internet depression  :(

I too use the same ISP as yourself Tiny, I have to agree they do an appreciable amount of throttling at what they call peak times, those seem to have stayed the same regardless of the clocks changing here  :o

I have had a good service out of them over the years mind you and happen to live in an area where there is no viable alternative, money is never the problem its just no one seems to want to provide a service that is what it claims to be ("unlimited").

I had to give up hosting the chatroom some time ago due to ISP IP changing at random times of the day, luckily other folks have stepped in with a web server to resolve that problem, but when your a commited p2p user and web site operator its a nail in the coffin for sure.

I have one small nugget of info that may be helpful to you though Tiny, there is an ongoing upgrade of the network going on atm that will see speeds lift to at least the 20 meg mark, BT are one of the few major companies even bothering to upgrade so it may be worth holding off of moving ISP just yet.

Hey guys, i am also a BT customer, and i have to say, just to balance things a little, they are the best ISP i have ever had, i use them at home and at my office. Perhaps its not a fair comparrison, as i only use around 30gig per month, but i have noticed none of the issues you guys have experienced, perhaps its luck, perhaps its just escaped my notice, but for now at least i am delighted with the service and continue to happily pay their rates even though there are cheaper services in my area.

I would also add, BT is the most reliable service i have found, i cant recall any outage in the 2 years i have been with them here, and upon calling them have been able to get free speed upgrades as they have improved lines and also have secured price reductions on my monthly tarrif. Just a tip guys, but call them up and ASK for a better monthly rate, my bet is, you will get at least a £5 a month discount, just cause you called, you may get more if you threaten to leave, lol! I have managed substantial reduction both at home and office, just by calling them!

am with nildram, £26 a month for 50gig/month peak with rollover (so effectively 100gig) and unlimited offpeak. I can normally get 6.5mbit most times of day and there's no fair usage policy...in my mind they restrict everyone else when i need full b/w ;-)
The one time I had to call customer service I got straight through to an English human who gave me her full name and direct line for any followups.
On the downside....they were bought by Pipex...and are now owned by Tiscali (yuk) but I've not seen any change in my service & I hope there wont be.

As for the free speed increases.....everyone gave them out free as BT wholesale changed the package structure to the ones buying the pipes AFAIK.

Tiny's package doesnt sound very 'business' for £45 a month. But I still think those paying more should get higher priority than those on cheapie package.
There are 10 kinds of people, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Ahh but i got mine months and months in advance of any such increases were even announced, i was running at a little over 6.5m whilst BT and its partners were only publicising 2m max, at this point it was not even set to be a free upgrade. At the same time as getting this upgrade, i was able to get a £6 per month price decrease for my office, what can i say? Its good to talk!

I am only bringing a little balance to this thread :D
