Can't connect either primary or secondary could it be my ISP
« on: November 16, 2007, 01:27:38 am »
Hi, new to the forum. I've been a user of WinMx for several years. Recently I have started having problems with  downloading files from others and others downloading from me. In most cases times out waiting for a connection. Today a new problem all I get is the yellow flashing box waiting on a connection.  Have tried both primary and secondary with no luck on either. I have tried going back to 3.31 and 3.53  was using 3.54 beta. Have uninstalled and installed with patches. My question is could my ISP be doing something cause a problem with WinMx ?

Thanks for the reply. I use Norton Internet Security which included their Anti-Virus, my operating system is XP sp2, I use the firewall in Norton Internet Security I have Windows Firewall turned off, I have a linksys router it is a Broadband Firewall Router BEFSX41 and I have the port forwarding set correctly. As I mentioned earlier all worked well until a couple weeks ago and it has slowly gotten worse to the point I can't even connect anymore to WinMx. That is why I'm suspicious of my ISP. Let me know if I can provide you with anything further. Thanks.

Hi Country

First of all as i know that all firewalls still run in the background once they are turned off.

If you have a look at this tutorial with nortons firewall:
https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/norton_2005.html

I would turn windows firewall back on and allow winmx through that.

Please give this a go and let me know how it goes.

Hi, did as you suggested. I removed WinMx from the Norton Firewall, turned on Windows Firewall allowed the two ports 6699 and 6257 in Windows firewall. Rebooted my computer. Same result. Tried turning off Norton Firewall same result. Can not connect to WinMx.

My ISP is Bright.net whcih I believe is a part of Comwavz. I've made a few more discoveries. I've taken my router out of the mix and connected direct to their modem for my wireless connection. I can connect to the internet just fine but when I try to run WinMx it won't connect. I then use my dial up modem and connect to bright.net and I can connect to the internet and also run WinMx just fine. Is it possible my IP address whcih is Static using the wireless connection is blocked somewhere? When I use the dialup the IP address is assigned. Just a thought.

Hi Country

I would look at changing the ports... try 16699 and 16257. Give these ago and make sure you check the internal ip as it does sound like just a port blockage now.

Please post back and let me know

At this point I still wouldnt rule out the ISP as having a block on WInMX too, they wouldnt be the first company to completely block WinMX from connecting and using dial up with success is the tell all of that ..

Because you removed the router and just used the modem its not as likely its a port issue.. WinMX doesnt require ports to make that network connection, only to transfer files or host a room so now its looking more like its the  ISP doing this.

At this point it might be wise to call the ISP and ask them if they are blocking your access to any programs like oh I dont know maybe WinMX.. and see what they say.

You probably need to take a look at your "fair usage policy" and read the small print. I'm guessing you are probably locked into some sort of contract with then? I would call them up and tell them you wish to use Winmx and as they are blocking it therefore service is unusable and could they release you immediatly from the contract. Then go find a more suitable ISP.

Don't forget THEY are blocking you from using a prefectly legal peice of software, and YOU are paying for this "service", you are in the right here....

Well guess what I talked to my ISP and they say they are doing noihing to block the use of WinMx, Limewire, or any such program. They say the problem lies with third party software or ports being blocked. Guess I'm back in the hunt again. I am using Norton Internet Security and have the ports 16699 alowed from any computer, both ways for TCP and port 16257 allowed from any computer both ways for UDP. I have WinMx allowed as a program. I have turned on Windows Firewall and allowed WinMx the port 16699 for TCP and 16257 for UDP. Anything you can think of that I might be missing?

By the way I've had Limewire running since I have been having trouble with WinMx and it has been working like a champ. Don't like Limewire but seems to add verification that my ISP is doing nothing to block.

Getting frustrated :D

What version of WinMx should I be running? And where would I download the installer from the archives on this site?

You can download WinMX with the patch bundled with it here.

My current status. I completely removed Norton Internet Security using Norton's uninstaller, removed version of WinMx I was running, ran Regedit to cleanup the registery, removed the router and connected directly to my wireless providers modem. Doing this removed any third party software concerns (Norton Internet Security), removed any port forwarding concerns by removing the router. And still can not connect. Called ISP and they assured me they are not blocking WinMx.  Also, I downloaded the latest version of winMx as suggested above. I've run out of ideas.

are you running limewire at the same time because i had a problem when running limewire and winmx together ...... winmx dropped connections untill it completely disconnected

also worth a check that none of your norton is still hanging around in your c/drive use start >>> search >>> and type norton ....just to check as its a stuborn bugger to get rid of some times

Im of the opinion that your isp is still your problem though.... using various different isp in the past i have been blocked on one p2p but allowed on another........ the reason they say they are not blocking winmx is so you have no case for canceling your contract with them should you wish to do so without penalty

At times Limewire was running but most of the time just trying to get WinMx to connect. I used the Norton uninstaller from their website. I ran my registery editor after the uninstall so don't believe there were any remaining pieces. I agree with your last statement my ISP is blocking the use of WinMx even though they say they aren't. Don't really have a lot of options for different ISP at this time so I guess it is so long to WinMx. Thanks to the Forum for all the help, have enjoyed my WinMx experience good luck in the future.
