newer, better router seems to diminish winmx performance
« on: December 14, 2006, 03:09:47 pm »
Hello...

I used to run winmx on my laptop through a BEFW11S4 11 MBps wireless router.
I've configured the ports correctly, assigned my laptop a static ip, and actually, it worked pretty good!
Quick primary connection, happy camper.

But I decided to get a newer router, a WRT54G, so I'd have a better power signal, and better router speed,
as well as better security.  Well, The router works pretty good as a router for the most part,
but I do notice, for example, that when I try to scan the chat channels, it's slower on the new router.

On the old router I could go to the winmx peer network, and within seconds, I'd have 1000's of rooms listed,
before I put my search filter on.
Now, with the new router (WRT54G), I"m lucky if on a primary connection I get only 400-500 rooms listed TOTAL....
and it's hard to find the main rooms I like looking for.

Anyone have any experience with that?
Does anyone know why the change when I've "upgraded to a newer, faster router?"
Anyone know any tweaks that I might be overlooking that would help that sort of issue?

Thanks in advance

This is a very common complaint we see here and in the help room

Im not familar with folks specifically on Linksys having this issue.  Why the router change would make the difference I cant say but here is what the normal cause is.

Usually this happens to only primary users.  When you ask for a channel List on primary your asking for a large fast UDP flood.  Many firewalls see this as an attack and stop it.  The common complaint is the 400-500 channels and some folks find that refreshing often helps but frankly thats a pain in the buttum.

So here are the two ways to fix it usually (keep in mind if the router is for some reason 'protecting you'  these dont esp apply to you)

Start your WinMX as a Secondary connection.  Get a full list.  Switch to Primary and enter the rooms you would like. (this will work even if its the router)
Turn off your software firewalls (sygate and McAfee seem to be bad about this) while you get a channel list.  You may also consider using the XP firewall as it doesnt have this issue.

Hope this helps you a bit.

Manye the router itself might be blocking the rush of data that it gets...
To protect from what it might be detecting as a flood. (false positive)

Cheers :P
Reconnect to winmx with the blocking patch :)

the router may well be the firewall blocking it, one of the regulars here got one of those routers and ended up turning off all of the routing in it and just using it as a hub because of that channel listing problem... yet many others use that (extremely common) router without any problems, which leads me to think it's a setting somewhere in the router

there may well be an option somewhere in it to disable it and get it working, have a look around and if you do happen to solve it then post here, at least one person will be interested in knowing the fix

Did anyone ever solve this?? Mine does the same damn thing.

I posted it on Linksys forum. The only reply told me to forward the default winmx ports, even though I told them it all worked before.

I SO wish I had known about this before I bought a router...... :(
