primary connection?
« on: April 05, 2008, 04:54:28 pm »
I have just recently switched to Xubuntu 7.10 from WinXP.
I have installed latest version of Wine and have successfully had winmx 3.54b4 running as a secondary connection.
successfully = can download/upload files
                    can enter chat rooms

My normal situation on Winmx thru winXP is a primary connection and I have a chat room, using WCS.
I would like this also when running Xubuntu, but for some reason i cannot change to a primary connection.
My internet connection is DSL.
Can anyone tell me where to start looking [in Xubuntu] and what needs to be changed to get my primary connection in Xubuntu?

Thank you

p.s. WCS is running in Xubuntu [all six connections are green] but when I click on Copy > Channel Name and then paste it to the Winmx channel list to create a room:
1] I get a lot of odd characters  [instead of rhe channel name]
2] and of course, since I am not a primary it won't let me create a room

so I guess I have multiple problems, but possibly getting the primary connection may solve some of the other problems?

start by looking in your router.. as this sounds like a port forwarding issue

Sorry should have stated- I dont have a router - only a dsl modem [comtrend CT-5071]

I can browse the internet and have downloaded files from users on winmx

I don't know maybe if  there is something I am not understanding, someone could explain?

The ports I am using on winmx are  TCP - 407    UDP - 427
When I try to change connection type in winmx I get:
"No TCP port for incoming connections"
"No UDP port for incoming and outgoing packets"

I never had to forward any ports for anything when running WinXP!
I know that the operating systems are different, but if [in Ubuntu] I didn't have to forward port to get online [thru firefox, synaptic pkg mngr, or apt-get, why would I have to forward ports for winmx or wcs?

at least 90% of current dsl modems have router functions built in, the fact that port testing failed during winmx setup & set it unable to use ports tends to confirm yours is one of them.. i suggest a trip to:

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

To see if your modem is listed, if so, click on it then on winmx in the list that comes up & follow instructions there...

Not being listed is not proof that your modem isn't NAT enabled the best confirmation of that is getting your ip address from your operating system
(not quite sure the details for ubuntu, probably in network properties)
& comparing it to the one at http://www.whatsmyip.org only if these ips are identical can you confidently state "i have no router"

dabud,

Part of the answer might be the following:
Linux won't allow normal users to use ports below 1024 by default, you need root rights for that.
Please try using ports above 1024 for winmx and see if it works then.

Secondly Bearded is right, your modem in fact contains a router you may need to forward ports through, a guide is here.

Good Luck!

OK  Bearded Blunder   I have done some checking re:  modem/router  - my operating system ip address and my
my check with http://whatismyipaddress.com/ shows that they are the same, so I am confidently stating   that I have no router [or at least the comtrend ct-5071 leased from my ip is setup that way, because, apparently the ct-5071s is classified as a modem/router].

][affy - The latest version of Wine has changes in it that allow Winmx to work [there is a link for info somewhere in this
forum.  Fairly new]

Nylly444 - yes I will try to change ports - do you have any suggestions as which ones are good?

Thanks all for replys   and your help

dabud,

regarding ports it's usually recommended to go very high in port numbers as many ports have services assigned to them already.
Mine are in the 50000 range, but actually any ports above 1024 should do, so just try it out :-)

@Taffy: Wine versions between 0.9.17 and 0.9.57 indeed won't work, but the issues are fixed in 0.9.58
Wine now has it's own working Gecko engine so it will startup and run without additional DLL overriding and even displays the update bar
correctly if you've put an entry in the HOSTS file for it manually

i'm sorry to have banged on, but you'd be amazed just how many times people have claimed no router.. only for the check i suggested to prove they actually have one, i recon nylly is on the right track, she's a full time linux user, wheras i only occasionally dabble

yep  Nylly  that was it    I changed tcp & udp ports and was able to be a primary connection.
Had a little trouble with WCS  and its config file - sorted that out
Now all I need to do is find the hosts file for the patch to show up in winmx bar

Anybody tell me where its located?   hosts file

thank all
