Ninety-Five Percent of P2P Use At Night ?
« on: November 29, 2007, 01:30:29 am »
Yes folks, thats the claim of some company that sells ISP's throttling equipment, maybe its true  :?

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071128-nocturnal-p2p-transmissions-account-for-95-percent-of-internet-bandwidth.html

Quote
New research from German deep packet inspection gear maker ipoque shows that in places like Eastern Europe, P2P apps can account for an astonishing 95 percent of all nighttime traffic. The survey also found that one particular peer-to-peer app, Skype, is also single-handedly responsible for 95 percent of all Internet telephony.

Ipoque gathered its data with the permission of ISPs and universities in Europe, the Middle East, and Australia between August and September of this year.
In all, the three petabytes of information collected show that P2P sucks up anywhere between 49 and 83 percent of all Internet traffic during the day, and can spike much higher at night.

But everyone knows that P2P use is high. One of the study's most interesting findings didn't concern the volume of traffic, but the fact the 20 percent of it is now encrypted as the "arms race" between P2P users and ISPs, content owners, and law enforcement heats up.
Increased network filtering—such as that being proposed in the US by AT&T and supported by content owners—would no doubt lead to the deployment of far more potent encryption.

I was researching some of this"more potent encryption" myself recently as it seems clear ISP companies are defaulting en masse in delivering to their customers what they claim to, whilst admittedly a p2p user is going to use more bandwidth that those who merely browse the web or check emails its no longer the case that p2p is the cheif hog of bandwidth.
With the introduction of many new online video services and sites such as YouTube and some illicit movie streaming sites its not really a suprise anymore that a battle for who gets a slice of the limited bandwidth is warming up. Lets hope we will adapt and survive, anything less will mean social swapping networks like winmx will be lost in the mists of time to be replaced by ISP/media corporation content, the choice is clear, to speak up when they claim we are hogging the bandwidth or to allow them to steal our networks by throttling and stealth, its your choice folks.

To be honest. ive also started only dling at night on torrents etc. I just leave my connection idle at peak times so that i have escaped the BT throttle i have been under. If you look in their terms thier is no actual limit on what you can dl. But they do cap for the strain you put on especially at peak times. Leaving my connection to just do the bare minimum between 5pm and 12 midnight has released me from the strangle hold they have had me on and i am back to enjoying being able to dl the odd app or pictures at full speed when i finish work. Although this is far from perfect an i shouldnt have to contend with any such restrictions it is at least tolerable seen as they dont mess with the packets what so ever at these peak times allowing my 24hr activitys to run smothely.

BTs scheduler is handy indeed.... now if only winmx had one.... (actually it would be nice if the ppl sharing files on winmx would actually stick around long enough that after i waited in queue for 3hrs i can actually get the file rather than have them disappear when im 3rd in line... but thats another subject... and one of many reasons i very rarely run winmx anymore)

To be honest stripes I find it hard to locate users who actually do turn it off, many folks come to us with old resolved problems stretching back many weeks or months because of the long time between shutdowns, keeps the help staff on their toes mind

well yes i agree that most people would leave p2p programs running at night, but through the day there is far more p2p useage, most people turn p2p off at night, only people that have high end systems would be willing to leave it on..  thats simply because people aint going to be sitting up all night on p2p... nothing to it... its hard to explain i guess but this sint supprising and didnt really need research

bw gets used more    would allso depend on   uker d/ling a file        which is released on usa tv
so it would mean time zone diff:   as usa day is uk night and vice verser
so stats  regarding  bw would have to put that into concideration aswell
so the stats are misleading you

The research accounted for this i believe by covering varying zones

The reason for more traffic at night is due to a lot of ppl working days and turning their pc off whilst gone thus restricting others from downloading from them to evenings while they are home ...just imagine how high those peaks would be if most peoples connections weren't strangled during the evening when they most need it  :)

If more ppl left the pc on whilst away working etc we could all no doubt look forward to throttling and blocking in the daytime in the name of fair usage also
catch 22 really....the isp have got to allow more bandwidth and stop trying to sell unlimited/restricted (same thing) packages when in all reality it is something they cant deliver
perhaps a honest sales pitch something like ......download all you can in the day/night because you wont get shit at peak times when you really need it.... might up there customer base..... because the unlimited usage pitch is a contradiction of terms & most everyone has come to realise that
