The copyright period for royalty payments will be extended to 70 years from the current 50 years after the original copyright holder dies, as a step to meet the requirements of the ``provisional'' free trade agreement (FTA) between South Korea and the United States.
At a Cabinet meeting President Roh Moo-hyun chaired Tuesday, the government passed this and other revisions on copyright protection.

Aside from the copyright protection, the intellectual property rights (IPR) sector ? a major part of the Korea-U.S. FTA ? includes patent and trademark rights.
Under the FTA, Korea is obliged to extend the period of a variety of IPR rights of U.S. companies. Legislatures of Korea and the United States have yet to ratify the accord.

Under the guise of looking after the interests of the artist/writer the Cartel of media giants have managed to ensure their monopoly lasts yet another 20 years on top of the 50 years after death of the person who created the work, 70 years plus a persons lifetime means in short that its likely many people will never be able to enjoy hear or even see some life enriching culture, this is morally wrong and as I make mention, this is an activity thats mostly confined to politicians who take "donations" for the Cartel.

Should ordinary citizens obey a law that censors creativity and innovation when its not controlled by the Cartels ?  I dont like to think so, but when big money comes calling what chance does a straight shoting politician have against a monopoly industry funded "enhanced copyright supporter"  Lets hope more folks use their votes globally to ensure democracy is safe from those who steal the things that make the experience of living something to treasure.
