WinMX Usage Leaps In Japan
« on: December 24, 2007, 04:22:22 pm »
Just when it seemed that folks where finding other ways and neworks to share their files, those with the fastest lines seem to be coming back to "old faithful" WinMx  :D

In just over a year the number of internet users file-sharing in Japan has increased by a staggering 180%, says the results of an online survey. The average number of files downloaded has more than doubled.

The survey - carried out online and financed and operated by a trio of industry organizations, similar to their well-known US counterparts - RIAJ (music), the Japanese MPAA and ACC (software) - concluded that the number of internet users sharing authorized media climbed from 3.5 per cent in June 2006, to 9.6 per cent by September 2007, a near 180% increase.

The numbers of files downloaded increased by a large amount too. June 2006 saw an average of 194 files downloaded per user which increased to 481 by September this year. Audio files topped the download charts with 211 per user with video coming in next with 183. People downloaded an average of 43 images, 33 documents and 14 pieces of software.

The survey found that the favorite P2P sharing application in Japan is still Winny with 27 percent. LimeWire, which is very popular in the West took 18.8 per cent of the vote with WinMX sitting at 15 per cent.
BitTorrent, which is incredibly popular all over the world with tens of millions of users, ranked just 6th with 7.4 per cent.

This is always good news for us to hear folks and whilst its been known for a long time that Japanese users make up at least 50% of the entire userbase its a great to hear they are very aware Mx is up and running and at a better than expected level, I,m sure you'll all agree with me this is a positive sign for the future and long may it continue  :D

Although this is great news for WinMX in general, it also goes to just how popular P2P still is by showing that there are still several different programs running strong despite efforts to halt them.

1st - Winny .... (27%)
2nd - LimeWire .... (18.8%)
3rd - WinMX .... (15%)
4th - ?? .... (< 15% && > 7.4%)
5th - ?? .... (< 15% && > 7.4%)
6th - BitTorrent (7.4%) "With tens of millions of users"

Even if the two unnamed are used 14.9% each, that leaves 2% for at least one other P2P program. Given the unlikely nature of this, there are more likely 2 or more other programs that are used by a large number of users, and if IRC or IM are not included in these stats, those are a whole different set of programs that many people use.

In other words, filesharing has barely even been dented by those who think it should be eliminated as something illegal even in the many cases when it isn't.
Downloading is an addiction I do not want to give up.

Another program that is very popular in Japan is called "perfect dark", I havent seen any western users on it yet but it was obviously built with stealth in mind so publicity is not really occuring outside Japan.
