Sarting today the familiar Netscape Browser used by many over the years will be unsiupported and slowly wound down.

A web browser that gave many people their first experience of the web is set to disappear.
Netscape Navigator, now owned by AOL, will no longer be supported after 1 March 2008, the company has said.
In the mid-1990s, as the commercial web began to take off, the browser was used by more than 90% of people online.
Its market share has since slipped to just 0.6% as other browsers such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox have eroded its user base.

The company recommends that users upgrade their browser to either Firefox or Flock, which are both built on the same underlying technologies as Navigator.
"I think we represent the hope that was of Netscape," Mitchell Baker, chair of the Mozilla Foundation which coordinates development of Firefox, told BBC News.
"We have picked up many of the things that Netscape launched but we've taken them further in terms of openness and public participation."

Whilst its always a shame to see such a well known name no longer present, we must look at the benefits of its legacy and many Firefox users are more than happy that a great replacement has been found in the newer cousin, farewell old friend.

NS3 was my favorite in the old days (4 not so much cos of the constant crashing but it was better than IE3).....

tho IMO when AOL bought netscape the netscape name lost any luster it had left (same goes for winamp) .. firefox is what netscape was always ment to be...

I am still a Netscape user (and a WinAmp user). I use old versions of both and am happier with them than any other browser or music-playing software I have tried since. I think people are far to eager to say "New version! Get it! It's better!" without considering that it will be more boged down in coding with things that they may never use.

I keep several browsers as backups for page testing, but I hae always prefered Netscape's layout and the fact that employs Profiles (an absolute MUST for me, keeping separate bookmak, history, password, and cache lists). Luckily I haven't needed any "support" with Netscape over the years, so this occurrence isn't going to have any real affect on me.

It is still a sad day to see one of the greats (and the only real competitor against IE in the beginning) going down.
Downloading is an addiction I do not want to give up.
