Hi guys, just wondering.. after you upload/download a file on WinMX, does it leave a trace of your IP address in the other person's computer?
I know that's the case with Kazaa - when u upload a file to someone on Kazaa, if the file transfer isn't 100% completed, the other person's computer is left with the incomplete file (download.dat file) and dbb file. These download.dat and dbb files contain information such as the name of the incomplete file, and which IP addresses were sharing that particular file. This means that if someone's computer is seized and their incomplete Kazaa download file analyzed, u can find out who the person downloaded that file from (i.e. u can catch the uploaders too, if necessary).
I was wondering if this is possible with WinMX too. When u download a file from WinMX, does the file/incomplete file contain information about which IP address it was downloaded from? Is the IP address of the uploader recorded anywhere in the computer (e.g. in registry or wherever)?
I do know that if a transfer is interrupted WinMX creates an "incomplete downloads.txt" file containing info about the download such as local path, remote path, expected size, user ID, server, and entry time, but I don't think it contains the IP address of the uploader.
If anyone knows anything about this please reply.. Thank you!
