Audible Magic "Failure Technology" And Why Its Virtually Useless

This is an interesting article based on the alleged "magic" properties of a simple bit matching algorithm in hardware that used to trigger TCP resets.

If you believe the anti-piracy lobbies, Audible Magic’s CopySense system is the absolute best system you can buy, protecting Universities, and more importantly, their students, from copyright violation accusations. However, the question has to be asked, “Does it really work?”

From just that 128KiB of data, Audible Magic claim they can identify a copyrighted work, and then terminate the connection.
If it sounds implausible, that’s because it is. It may work with systems like DC++, or possibly eD2k (as well as SoulSeek and KaZaA), but there is no way it can be accurate or effective with BitTorrent.

As highlighted in the recent case involving the baby dancing to a Prince soundtrack, fair use is a perfectly adequate defence. This system makes no allocation for fair use at all. In the case, the judge ruled that before copyright enforcement can take place, the copyright owner is required to consider if the usage is fair use. An automated system is incapable of that.

This system could hurt mx users unfortunately,  but as you all know we have ppl beavering away behind the scenes to look at methods to fix this one small avenue left open to disrupt us and I expect when a new client turns up this problem will have been theoretically addressed and resolved in code, it seems something simple such as out of sequence file chunking could be a simple solution or even a simple encryption system based on an interesting "delayed key" concept that would not require tons of processing power.

The article is a 2-part one so lets look forward to the next set of discoveries of why this RIAA supported "magic tool" is just not up to the job.
