This is just a work around I found because of the way windows tracks activation on vista and 7.
If say your motherboard goes out and you have to replace it or you upgrade your ram windows will ask to reactivate.
what its actually doing is telling microsoft you installed windows on a second computer wich means the third time around you violate your license and need a new key.

But!
instead of buying a new key when it says it is unable to activate.
It will either say activate by phone or show me other ways to activate(as in the image below) depending on how you went about activating.
it gives you a window with an area selection. pick your country or the one closest to you and give them a ring.
These calls are toll free (and note the little computer landy cant unserstand you if your really mad)
If you have issues with speaking to her heres some tips
you can type the numbers she asks for.
1 is repeat
2 is continue
0 is help

She will then ask you how many computers vista/7 is installed on.
Tell her one and they will reset your computer count and give you a new key to activate windows with.

Do this with your 2 kids arguing in the background. Tell the lady to hold on and yell at your kids. Explain that the stupid OS crashed and you were told to do a whole new install or something like that, then hold up phone towards yelling kids and let her have 5 seconds of them. Then tell her that you have no idea what you are doing but that kids want to Google video of cuddly polar bears mauling people at zoos. It works.

I get rejected by the computerized lady and end up speaking to a real person who changes the installation ID or something.

A guy in my old computer class would find Windows CD keys online and call in for replacement keys.

You should in no way do this to get out of buying a key. Microsoft put this into place so that those who buy the real version can fix what they messed up.

This service should in no way be used to pirate Windows versions.

I agree with xapian.
I have a key that i purchased and i had exceeded my install limit thanks to two mobo failures. This kept me from buying a second key or pirating it so i posted this with the intent to keep people from purchasing a second key that they didnt need.

That seems like a lot of work.

I use Win7 in permanant demo mode myself.

All the updates and whatever persist.

It is possible to keep the beast in demo mode forever, with lots command lines typed from time to time.

I should mention this but Win7 is very nice, also, very 'hackable'.

Maybe this is why microsoft is now pushing Win10 so hard?

Anyway, no need for any key, the default from Microsoft itself as a demo works just fine, and you dont have to get on the phone either once demo time runs out.

retype the same things and it resets itself (for another 4 months).

Simplified by not even typing at all, a bat file will do.

Am I naughty for doing such things? Yup.

Do I care to spend hundreds of dollars every few years just to have the 'latest' OS? Nope.

I am an old guy, been into computers since they were invented.

This idea of paying good money for an OS then being held hostage for MORE money is not acceptable to me. I know too much to deal with that sillyness and greed.
