THE SUPPLY of 3.5-inch hard disk drives (HDDs) for use in desktops and servers has started to dry up.It seems that drive makers have been caught on the hop by a sudden increase in demand for 3.5-inch hard drives. According to Digitimes, suppliers in Taiwan had predicted there would be an increase in demand for the 2.5-inch drives used in notebooks.Western Digital (WD), Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba and Samsung Electronics increased production of 2.5-inch HDDs used in notebooks due to short supply arising from fast-growing demand for notebooks in 2009.However none of them predicted that the desktop market would start to pick up too. WD and Seagate are currently the two main suppliers of 3.5-inch HDDs with a combined global market share of over 80 per cent.Since they were busy concentrating on notebooks they didn't increase production for desktops.Analysts are now predicting that there will be a shortage of desktop hard drives into the middle of next year. This could push the prices up.
