i'll go primary if i can get help with the ports
« on: November 05, 2005, 10:44:24 am »
I need help on how to open the ports of my modem-router, these are my data:

OS: XP Home
Connection: DSL
Provider: Wanadoo
Modem-Router: Router Wifi Thomson ST 580

I've been unable to find help about that router on all the help forums i've visited but i've seen they all explain how to change the router settings and i'd like to know:
Wouldn't it be easier to find out what ports are availabe and just tell winmx to connect through them?

Thanx for any help or advice you can give me

Hi ppitogrillo,

Sorry it took me so long to reply to your request, as you mentioned your model of router is not on the PortForward site.  So I went and did a little searching and found the information we need and created a guide for you.

https://www.winmxworld.com/tutorials/router_thomson_580.html

This should walk you through step by step on how to set up your router to allow you to have a primary connection and support secondaries on the WPN.

If you have any ?s or other problems please let me know..

great me, i opened the ports on my router and on my firewall and ran the winmx setup wizard and i am on primary now.
But i have some questions i hope you can answer.

First what's the WinMx Peer Network window for? (i mean the one that's right below Host Name Resolution in the settings).  What are the best values there and why?
I suppose it's got something to do whith the amount of bandwith you allow winmx to use. Is that correct?

On the Networks window what do mean the values i get for Primary Connections, Incoming Secondary Connections and SPPM?
Is there any way to control that or would it be of any use?

Thanks

In the WinMX Peer Network settings yes you are correct, those values are for the amount of Allocated Bandwidth you will give to the Network.  This is usually set at

7 KB/s out and 10.5 KB/s IN

Meaning your going to connect to 7 other primaries and allow around 10 secondaries to connect to you.  The higher these values the higher those numbers at the top of your WinMX. This setting will also increase your speeds.

P=7 S=10 spm= searches per minute running through you and will vary.

The best settings are usually around

9 KB/s Out and 13.5 KB/s IN
This combo is a good balance between what you give and get from the network.

The Search Thread Priority is recommeded to stay at IDLE
The Search Thread Duty Cycle is set at 80% by default and usually lowering this to 40% will use less of your computers resources.

I think that covers your questions but if not as always just ask ...
