download speed stable. upload unstable
« on: December 07, 2010, 12:50:55 pm »
my download is very good. it can reach my download capacity.

However, my uplink is bad. when I trade with someone, my download from him is stable. but uplink starts with a good speed. e.g 100k, then go down to
50k, finally(after 1 minutes) to 0 and disconnect with code 'upload timeout'.

I dont do any limitation on my UL speed. I want the answer ASAP because nobody would like to trade with me at more. :secret:

That looks very much like your ISP applying a throttle. Have a word with your ISP.

My ISP told me there is no other similiar complains. I also suspect it's ISP reason but could anyone tell me how to get the proof

Go to other websites, like Microsoft.com or Majorgeeks.com, anywhere that has larger downloads, and try to run a download, any file bigger than 500mb.

Watch download speed and stability.

Then call your ISP and demand to know why they lie about not throttling
What you think is important is rarely urgent

He is not talking about DOWNloads and i don t think they ld throttle http Bluey but either way it can be quite hard to get microsoft to download from you (other than statistics etc)

You might want to go to speedtest.net and see what happens but even that will not detect throttle

Maybe a peek in your router log would tell you something more? worth a shot i guess

is there any other program running when this happens that could hyjack the uplad bandwith maybe? try shutting all other programs you can think off

I hope this helped a little, Greetings,

you might also want to do a google search for something like ... Your ISP's name and the word throttle

or see if they have a forum where others might have posted about the same problem?

It's like pulling teeth trying to get an ISP to admit what they do. It's normal for ISPs to throttle uploads rather than downloads. The pattern that you describe is typical of an ISP throttle.

thank you all for your kind replies.

I observe that the uload to one user can not last more than 5 minutes.  My max total upload is 4. so if someone disconnected by ISP. someone else in the queue will start immediately. It means the ISP can not get any benefit because my averaging upload is somehow stable.

the pain point is I can not upload to specific user for a long time.. but downlaod works pretty well. This is really amazing feature.

For an ISP it's not so much about benefit but just about limiting "suspicious traffic" like p2p activities etc

if i understand correct they did not say "we don t throttle" but gave you another answer (to a question you never asked) "we have no other complaints ... this is where it allready  starts to smell fishy

the upside is that if they do throttle and you are sure enough ...they are breaking their promises and you would be free to break your contract too (at least in my country it s like that)

some may call it a feature (especially ISP's ..lol) you obviously don t, keep digging and you ll find the reason ..i'm sure

oooh and those 5 minutes may just be the time they need to analyze your new activity ;)
