I dont think your seeing the problem in the same light as myself Stripes, when half the primary networks down to a one primary node conection many are not carrying secondaries and as you well know all secondaries hold a stored cache of live  IP's updated once per minute so its not really going to affect anyone to any great extent,

Man I'm glad I looked here to see what's going on. I thought something was wrong with my WinMX installation. I been gone for a while, moved to a new home. When I brought the comp back up and checked WinMX it was all f'd up. No room list, no matter what I searched for I got same bunch of unrelated junk. If I searched for videos I got everything under the sun, including mp3 and exe files. LOL

I been on WinMX for a long time, went through the shutdown several years ago and we lost several people from our room then. Looks like this is another thing that is going to drive people away *sigh*.  We need to get the word out on how to get a room list back. Person to person browsing/sharing seems to work just fine. But the search function for the network itself is still messed up. Someone in a room I had saved gave me a website to go to that has a roomlist that updates itself. Does winmxworld have one too? If so, you should post it on the front page so people will see it first thing. Some rooms don't have static numbers, they change all the time, so if you save their room it may not work next time. I don't want people to give up on WinMX and go to other P2P networks.

Thanks, This should be on the page with the news updates explaining what's going on. We can stop more people from leaving if they know where to go to find the rooms they normally hang out in. The one I was given was from Unlimited, it got me back to where I needed to be, but you should definitely post the one by Stevi in a prominent place so people can find it easier and get back to sharing. I found out that many people I knew on WinMX have switched over to Ares and other places because of the recent problems. We  need to stop the exodus!

As anyone who can use Google knows torrents are the fastest way to get a nastgram though the door as instead of downloading quite legally may I add your forced uploading to many folks and thus the putting your neck on the line for a civil extortion action.

People came to winmx for a reason, it wasnt to be sued. as usual the stats prove the case winmx sued 0 - torrenters threatened with suit 250,000+.
Many of those threatened have paid out between 1-2000 dollars, if you like playing russian roulette with your net connection and your wallet then of course do so.

only get 'nastygrams' in the mail if you're downloading something you arent supposed to be...

http://vo.do/
http://www.jamendo.com/
http://www.publicdomaintorrents.net/
http://www.gutenberg.org/

if those sites cant keep you occupied for a at least a few days somethings wrong...

and ofc theres nothing stopping anyone from sharing that stuff (well... some of the hd stuff might hit the filesize limit) over mx... infact id welcome the sight of a few vodo downloads in someones shares...

btw, www.youtube.com and www.keepvid.com are a good combo for mp3s ;)

The large number of threatened suits seem to show that most folks are uploading stuff they shouldnt be.

I believe one monitoring group claim that the majorty of bit torrent users are doing the same, pop over to slycks for more reports of this nature as they often have them there, the facts are pretty plain.

I bet to differ.

As stated numerous times now the stats shows a worring trend of pretend lawsuit extortion for those using bit torrent, you cant claim the same for WinMX.

Exactly Stripes. If anyone is trying to say people are not sharing copyrighted music and movie files on WinMX they obviously don't use it.

But going back to WinMX not being a target due to its small size, the same goes for private torrent sites. As long as you're not being an idiot and using something as horrible as the pirate bay, the chances are very low of ever being sued. As private bittorent sites usually specialize in a specific type of media only. And in order to be a part of those websites, you have to be invited by a friend, or pass an interview of some kind that makes sure you know what you're doing in pertaining to the media the tracker site is based upon. These private sites also take work to stay in, because you can't just download download download. You have to give back to the community via seeding or uploading your own content.

I don't think people came to WinMX solely to avoid being sued. They came here because Napster had been shut down, and this was ONE of the available options. WinMX really  is not much safer than bittorent when looking at ways to identify who is sharing what file. In a bittorent seed swarm you can see everyone who has the files in the torrent, or partial files. In WinMX, each search result has the ip address of who is sharing that file inside it. There really is not anything safer when looking at it this way. It may had been safer when the protocol and encryption had not been reverse engineered. However, seeing as there still are companies out there running search bots for common artists and keywords, they obviously are aware of the protocol, and are receiving those search results with the ip addresses of who is sharing what.

Why they have not gone after anyone, I and no one else here knows. But they have indeed been collecting information for some time.

alot of ppl feel the same way about torrents,,, has nothing to do with REN room if u actually went into the room u would see there are alot of members from different rooms on mx in there that feel the same way your just trying to make a personal vendetta with pri and its roomies.

Still, it begs the question:

Why does WinMX NEED to become a torrenting style client??

Perhaps many of the proponents dont realise, there are doubtless thousands who would be happy for winmx to stay as-is with perhaps an update that allows bigger file sizes and a few other lil tweaks.

I Like it pretty much as-is and I'm sure many others do

The fact that it ISN'T a torrenting client dont make it bad, or outdated...

It's simply WinMX!
