Strange search results
« on: May 12, 2011, 01:10:47 pm »
LS,

Since a few days I get an huge amount of results when I use search. No matter what I look for I pretty much get the same results. All 'japanese' characters offcourse in both title as username. Something is fishy.

Hi,

Thx for the quick reply. I think I had the wrong patch after a re-install. I dl-ed the winmx setup with patch included and after a while it's working properly. It says now FSR 542 BC 7 . When I posted It was 0/0 . However I checked a few suspicious results on WHOIS and some indeed listed a huge amount of files as well as slots but some listed 45 files and 1 slot.

And maybe (or maybe I didn't read the forum well enough) it's a good Idea to have a 'latest news flash' on the side for this kind of thing. If I read "it's an attack strange search results" I wouldn't bother to disturb you.

Thanks again

YS,

I'm still getting weird results that have nothing to do with what I'm looking for. Also, be careful with video especially....I find there are ALOT of files with kiddie porn! those people should really be reported! For example, I type in Motley Crue, and files show up that say '3 year old gets gangbanged..." "my 10 year old gives...." you get the idea. It's not easy trusting even  a real file if this is what it contains. It's scary the amount of it out there! Be careful , fellow MXers!!!

As much as it disgusts me that their are folks like this in the world, you will find that many of them are abit more savy than naming their files this way. And many of the files like you have posted above are infact law enforcement agencies attempting to harvest IP's of said sicko's. i read in the news recently someone is using pedo files as a matter to stop P2P. i bet in his manifestor this hasnt been added to it.

I am having this issue too and I have just installed the 3.54b release of winmx. Everything I have perused talks about why an how and what but if this version has the community patch and it is the one thing to fix these search results coming in like this with no relevancy, why is it still not working? should i uninstall and get the 3.53? thanks.

Your winmx version number will make no difference
The search results are real files, but a canny saboteur has interfered with the search request stream so that no matter what you search for, the search request goes out as a search for C:\ so what you begin to see is all the shares of everyone that has their shares folder on their C: drive

It might take a while, but if everybody had their shares in a folder on another drive instead of C: the network might become workable again

I wish I knew more about such things, but it would rock if someone could update the software with a script to exclude that C drive prompt.

jim, i'm in agreement with yas! wow, so in order to get the exact file you are looking for you have to go through all 1400000 files results? that sucks:( and there still isn't a fix for it....so is winmx only good for chat now since i keep seeing threads about people invading the chat rooms

Hey Ghost, that was gonna be my next reply-I never really had a prob with the open nap side as far as servers but I know the conflict happens if you are connecte on WinMx and trying ot use the servers too. Your best bet is to disconnect, then connect to an Open Nap server or two. I know for me personally in the past its where Ive had the best success.

Racerjohn, those Japanese users can be frustrating, but they are in the majority.

When a download you have going becomes Multi-sourced, some of the sources could well be Japanese users with unreadable filenames.

When THEY download from us, they may indeed rename the file with Japanese characters, but the hash number wont change, so the file will be indexed the same as always.

I would be happy if they renamed with bi-lingual filenames, but unlike the RIAA, we can't dictate to all...
