Dvd Decrypter Removed From The Net By Macrovision

It seems that the strong arm tactics of big business are paying off.

Macrovision Corporation recently acquired the intellectual property rights in all versions of DVD Decrypter from its author, Lightning UK!. As the current owner of the intellectual property rights in DVD Decrypter Macrovision has contacted us to inform that "any license granted by Lightning UK! to AfterDawn for the distribution of any version of the Software [DVD Decrypter] is hereby terminated with immediate effect."

Even though the means used to acquire the rights to DVD Decrypter bore probably more resemblance to the common methods of the entertainment industry, we have no reason to object the request made by Macrovision. They do, in any case, own the rights to the software, and are entitled to enforce any policy they see fit.

The DVD Decrypter install package will be removed from our servers by Sunday, November 27th, or as soon as it is technically possible.

The afterdawn site was one of the last few places to get the decryptor software, and what with Macrovision obtaining the rights to it I suppose they have no choice.

As a side note Macrovision is the same company flooding WinMX on behalf of the MPAA/RIAA members

And now to the good news .. I had a poke about on the same site and came across this useful tool.

Back in February this year, Macrovision made a terrible attempt to scare the "ripping community" with the introduction of RipGuard. The company claimed that RipGuard would "stop DVD rippers in their tracks" and would have a dramatic effect on the amount of content that makes its way to P2P networks. "RipGuard is designed to... reduce DVD ripping and the resulting supply of illegal peer to peer," said the firm.

However, Macrovision's "perfect" RipGuard solution does not match up to the firms claims. "We were able to circumvent the technology and rip a perfect copy of ['Madagascar'] using a free DVD ripper downloaded from the Internet," Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster wrote in a recent report. Yes that is true, "FREE" DVD ripping software already stops the RipGuard copy protection in its path.

This is bad news for Macrovision and the studios, who were promised 97% of lost revenue returned by Macrovision if they invested in RipGuard technology. In fact, Macrovision has such little faith in its own creations that it has to bully coders and sites in a desperate attempt to make these rippers disappear, so that movie studios can be fooled into believing their copy protection is as effective as they claim.

I suspect that the newer programs will just continue doing what they do best, bypassing any of Macrovisions over-hyped protection...  8)

I don't know if anyone else has noticed the sudden rash of flooding on WinMX for the dvd decrypter, but if you do a search it is unreal!

I thought "Now, if that doesn't show fear on their part!"

It is a shame that film and music industry is determined to keep up the campaign to not allow us our rights to have archival copies of our property.

I wonder...How much of their precious revenue is wasted on this mission of theirs? How much money are they spending to chase the wind? They need to face reality. They are mearly cutting the heads off of an electronic hydra. Cut one off, two grow back. Everytime they attempt to remove our rights, we will very insistantly show them that they have no authority to remove our rights, and rather than the rest of the world bending to the will of a business, they will be left with no choice but to realize that it is OUR rules that THEY must play by.

I mean, come on! Is it the tiny group of whiners that are gonna sculpt the world, or is it the rest of the free world that has the power and the right to squash them?

After all, who is depending on who? The normal free thinking person doesn't need them. But without us they have NO INCOME WHATSOEVER!

So is it really that smart for them to step on the toes of the ones who feed them?

And if they are that delusional to believe they can force us all to support them, then they are not smart enough to last the electronic revolution that is happening.

Much Love and Be Good,
Scyre
