Copyright Industry Calls For Broad Search Engine Censorship

At a behind-closed-doors meeting facilitated by the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport, copyright holders have handed out a list of demands to Google, Bing and Yahoo. To curb the growing piracy problem, Hollywood and the major music labels want the search engines to de-list popular filesharing sites such as The Pirate Bay, and give higher ranking to authorized sites.

It’s no secret that the entertainment industries believe search engines are not delivering enough when it comes to protecting copyright works. Just last month, the RIAA and IFPI accused Google of massively profiting from piracy, while putting up barriers to make life difficult for rightsholders.

Internet search engines that operate in the UK could stop publishing links to websites that are deemed to be substantially infringing copyright under plans proposed by groups representing rights-holders.

The groups have proposed a voluntary code of practice for search engines in a bid to get them to engage more in tackling online copyright infringement. If adopted the code would also require search engines to relegate sites in their rankings for repeatedly making pirated content available and boost links to other "licensed" sites under a new "certification" scheme.

maybe Search engines should start blocking Cartel websites, Links to them, and references to them.

Imagine, a search for 'MPAA' returns 'Error 404 - Page not found'  :D

Yeahh, i know, all the news sites would lose lotsa hits too. Absurd innit?

Lots of ad profit anyway if you are that way inclined, seems to me the news is being bombed with lots of stupid ideas. But hay, one may get threw *cough* acta.

This idea appeals to me very much on an emotional level and would give me a strong sense of satisfaction if implemented. If nothing else it would help stop the interweb from appearing powerless in the face of the steamroller that is the cartel.

One word to defeat search engine censorship

         YACY

Imagine if, rather than relying on the proprietary software of a large professional search engine operator, your search engine was run by many private computers which aren't under the control of any one company or individual. Well, that's what YaCy does! The resulting decentralized web search currently has about 1.4 billion documents in its index (and growing - download and install YaCy to help out!) and more than 600 peer operators contribute each month. About 130,000 search queries are performed with this network each day.

I already operate a yacy senior peer so I'm all ready, what about the rest of you  8)

moving form dial up to adsl2+ would be like moving from a datsun sunny to nissan skyline
they both go onn the roads, but the skyline is just so much more comfortable and fast

'Heh....Looks good.  I can't dig up too much information on it while I'm here at work so I'll do so in a couple of days when I'm off and have some time.  I like the idea of "fuck your censorship and search rankings".  Thanks for posting this up.

I got it working the other day....Works good! Finds all sorts of stuff I never seen come up in other engines.
A bit slow for my dinosaur of a PC, but hay, it's also P2P. Lots of sources to gather from to yield its results.
I like it and am keeping this one around.

Just installed.  I have lots of stuff to go through and learn.  I'll have to muck with it when the wife and boy go to bed.  :)
