My apologies then Stripes, I'm still rather upset with those behind the attacks and those who have aided them however thats no blame at your door.

all things considered... and all the insults that have been flung around by various parties... i think 'whats left' of the group has held together quite well...

the ones that stab in the back and/or fling hurtfull insults then walk away (or even act as if it didnt happen) are the lost ones...

a true friend is one you can get in a screaming match with and at the end of the day still call a friend...

who knows... maybe even KM will come to his senses one day...

Lets discuss the search or query function in the new client. Any ideals on what would be best suited for the WPN once all the bugs have been ironed out?  Are you looking into DHT or do you already have some other method that is near complete?  In an ideal world what method would be best for optimal performance in a decentralized P2P network such as the WPN? I know you can't give away too much info due to the attacks, but maybe some ideal of what to expect in the future would be great. Are we going to be looking at a query function that yields similar results as the old client?  How much room will their be for change, and optimization in this area?

As I have made clear I hope, the future will be as good as the development team can make it, if new methods or technologies appear that bring substancial benefit and are usable in some form within the new client then it will likely be used, for the initial builds however we are sticking roughly to the successful current model with many security based changes.

No one is pretending to know everything here and folks like Stripes have done great service in bringing new ideas to be looked at in our development section, community input is very important as is community feedback, please discuss, proffer ideas and look for holes in what we plan for the future, that is the best way to acheive a happy balance in this area between key features and gimmick level ideas, we all gain from dicussion  :-D

I thought of a cool feature I would like to see in WinMx.  There has been many times I have sent messages  to users when sharing files with them to find out they do not speak English well or not at all. It would be nice to have an option for the user to list what languages they speak. It could be listed in the whois box or another area of the program. I know it's not priority but maybe nice to see someday.

Thats a simple thing to add to the whois window Achilles, perhaps teamed up with a settings so folks could select their country from a drop down list.

A little country flag (Sean uses a icon set currently in his Chat.Net) next to the country would look pretty good to, even for the display purposes in the whois?

... dont think the flag idea would be a good one since not everyone knows what the various flags look like...

something like 'Spoken languages: <option1> , <option2>, <option3> ' in good ol readable text in the whois box seems the best to me... course the problem of a lack of unicode support comes into play in being compatible with the elder client so use a pre-defined set... that way a japanese user sees japanese characters without an english user seeing jumbles... they just see the word 'japanese'...

Meant the flags as an addition, not instead of the text.

seems... unnecessary... considering the text would have already given the info needed...

IMO leave the 'glitter' to the .net apps of the world...

Another nice audition to the the whois box would be interest or hobbies.  Example: Interest: Martial Arts, Foreign Languages, Programming.  It would facilitate making new connections with users of like interest .  I believe the languages spoken, flag ideal, and interest or hobbies would make for a greater user experience and facilitate making many long lasting friendships from afar.

If you're really adamant, Stripes, about using text only, then perhaps you need to figure a way that unicode is standard. Oh! It is already?

Then we have an incompatibility issue with the older client?  DAMN! I didnt think that we were striving to maintain such compatibility, simply as a means of encouraging users to update!

Ahhhhhhh, but you are worried about those who will refuse to update, alleging some kind of nasty WMW conspiracy, well, fie, Fie! to them, let them go and stew in their 3.31soup if they really wanna believe that...

Personally, I thought the flag icon was a pretty cool idea :D

All good stuff, Achilles, and a default setting on install that has messaging open to all and a Vista style 'Are You Sure' nag box, that you have to click thru 47 times to set messaging to 'private'

BTW, speaking of flags, which is the only country in the world that has a flag which is NOT a sign of distress if (deliberately) flown upside-down?

unicode is a standard yes but it wont play nice till everyone has updated every aspect.... that is.. new client.. new chatservers... new chat clients... new bots..  if it uses codepage 1250/1251 or shift-jis or the various other non-unicode methods of grafting a foreign language into an 8bit (255 chars) method its not going to work right...

or in short... my concern was/is that the elder client wouldnt show the data correctly... so its a feature best left till much later even tho it could be implemented from the start considering the ease of adding info to the whois window...

out of the gate the message 'using the new client downloadable at <address>' in both english and japanese (shift-jis) added to whois would be best... ...migration is a good thing but lets keep the 'computer handicapped' and 'language barriers' in mind first...

and as far as the flag goes... sure... as long as setting it is optional...

and i will be honest when i say that richy (/rcukillroom) rubbed my fur just a little the wrong way when he said to make it like (phonehome) chat.net .... granted the chat.net author apologised for his gaffe...

and while we are in the process of annoying users lets add a flag of some sort indicating that the user is firewalled in the search results so we can all heckle err... avoid them...

Other than invertible designs, like the French that has only vertical stripes...

The Philippines, horizontal stripes...

Blue along the top, Situation Normal, Red along the top, Filipinos ire has been raised and are at war!

more on the upsidedown flag thing;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distress_signal

Quote
For hundreds of years inverted national flags were commonly used as distress signals. However, some countries' flags are difficult (e.g. Spain, South Korea, the UK) or impossible (e.g. Japan) to determine whether they are inverted. Other countries have flags that are inverses of each other: the Polish flag is white on the top half and red on the bottom, while Indonesia's is just the opposite--which would again make it difficult to determine if the flag is being flown upside-down as a distress signal. A ship flying no flags might also be understood to be in distress.[1]

If a flag is available, distress may be indicated by tying a knot in it and then flying it upside-down, making it into a wheft.[2]
