Cryptic error message from WinMX
« on: December 15, 2005, 02:28:37 pm »
When attempting to download songs I occasionally have this message pop up on my monitor in a box titled WinMX: “The total character length of the path of the file you’re trying to create is too long.”

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean or if there is anything I can do about it.

Is there anybody who can clue me in on what this is all about?

Me i know.

I'm not sure if it's still relevant to new operating system like XP, but in older system, the total lenth of a path including the file name could not be greater than 255 caracthers.  But even if it's not a problem anymore for recents system, MX still think it is.

I had the same problem.  I fix it easy (for me) by creating a new partition in wich i created a new folder with a short name and said to MX to put his incomplete and complete files there.

I think you could avoid the partition thing and just make a new "download" folder at the root of any existing disk or partition.

See ya.

Kadabra,

Thanks for the clue.  FYI, I have Windows XP with SP2.

Me too.
Still, MX is "not really" an XP app (though it works great on it most of the time).
