Computer networking firm Cisco will sell purpose-built Google Android PCs and a new online service in an effort to boost use of its teleconferencing products.

The DX70 and DX80 desktops unveiled on Monday include a microphone, monitor and webcam. They were designed for enterprises to eliminate employees' desktop clutter but not to replace their work PC. Instead, Rowan Trollope, a Cisco senior vice president, said they were created to take on the functions of other desktop hardware and accessories.

"None of this stuff was designed to work together," Mr Trollope said of existing hardware and accessories.

"That's a problem [and] we solve that by building all of that into one device and by tightly coupling the hardware and the software to deliver an incredible experience. So we took the Cisco phone … and built it right [into these devices]."

The 14-inch and 24-inch screen devices will be priced between $US1000 ($1074) and $US2000.

Both have multi-touch capabilities, run Android 4.1.1, have 1.5 gigahertz processors, eight gigabytes of flash storage, two gigabytes of memory, and screen resolutions of 1920 x 1080. They also have built-in collaboration tools, such as Evernote, that allow information on a user's screen to be shared with others, can connect to an external keyboard, be tilted almost flat to use like a tablet, and allow web browsing.

The DX80 has a "what you see is what you hear" feature that combines four microphones to eliminate background noise. This means someone not in frame will not be heard by conference participants even if talking loudly.

Mr Trollope said the devices will require a download and upload speed connection of only approximately one megabit per second (Mbps) for crisp conference sound and audio because they have algorithms and optimisation technology that doesn't require much bandwidth.
