Modem Attack Allows for Persistent Malware

At a demonstration at the DefCon security conference in Las Vegas,
researchers demonstrated how they could install malware on certain
LTE/3G modems that are built in to some laptops and tablets that would
persist even after operating system reinstalls. The problem is due to
an insecure firmware update process.
