UK Seeks To Extend Piracy Penalties

I wonder who is getting paid via the backdoor to enact this draconian measure  :S

The UK Government plans to increase the maximum prison sentence for online copyright infringement to ten years.
The new proposal follows a suggestion put forward in a study commissioned by the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) earlier this year.

The study concluded that the criminal sanctions for copyright infringement available under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (CDPA 1988) could be amended to bring them into line with related offenses, such as counterfeiting.

Before implementing the changes the Government launched a public consultation, asking for comments and advice. While the responses have yet to be made public, thus far we have not seen any comments from groups supporting the proposal, but UK entertainment industry organizations such as FACT and BPI are likely to weigh in later.

As always consumers cannot expect a fair deal when either cash, gratuities or even the promise of a good job for an ex -minister or other person of influence are made when they leave office, the legitimate activity of many is infringed by the greed of a few it seems.

Your conversation shines a welcome light of reality on an increasingly farcical situation, the copyright extremists seem hell bent on pushing for fantasy level penalties for what equates to the loss of a few pounds if that, what egos they have.

Small update on this topic here:

The UK government plan to jail online copyright pirates for up to 10 years has been attacked by legal boffins in a public consultation that ended yesterday.

The British and Irish Law, Education and Technology Association (BILETA), said the idea was “unacceptable, infeasible and unaffordable”.
