Why is it that certain OpenNap Protocol Networks will automatically ban me for not sharing enough when I'm sharing over 13,000,000,000 bytes but only 144 files (these are mostly ALBW files), yet other users don't get banned but are in reality sharing far less than I in bytes? These networks must only count an actual number of files shared, not the length of said files?

Because their servers are set to count the number of files shared (although some also exclude tiny files) not the amount shared in bytes.

If a person uses a program like MXMonitor, it can be set to filter out people by the number of files they share as well as by k-bytes. I personally am sick and tired of users who only share one type of file...most notably MP3's, and I promptly add them to my ignore list manually. Try broadening your horizons...music ain't everything. Add a little variety...movies, software, pictures, etc., and you'll find people a little more receptive to what you're offering.

That actually makes you rather pathetic - there's a variety of stuff to be found out there, and as long as people are sharing something I've no problem with them downloading from me.

I for one don't actually wish to own movies on my PC, and don't have the latest software to share either. I do specialise in rare radio comedy series' that people might not find anywhere else. Just as this may not be to everyone's taste, not everyone likes music, and not everyone likes films and TV or wishes to download potentially virus ridden warez.

I'd concentrate your rage against people that share nothing at all, or use the zero available connections hack.....

Thank you BeardedBlunder and c2R for your replies. I've used WinMX for a long time and am well aware it helps if one shares more than one file type. However, that was not my issue. I was specifically referring to OpenNap Networks banning users for not sharing enough (file counts) when in fact some users if they were to unwrap albumwrap files would in turn actually be sharing thousands of files. This, I have come to find, is one of the many drawbacks of WinMX.

Also, Y NOT's reply was totally unrelated to what is happening on opennap servers, where some server/admin/bot filters are in place.

Scorpz, the simple fact is some opennap admins are using broken or misconfigured tools to do their testing.

I an frequently banned from bunnymatrix for the same reason "Banned- share more" when I am sharing over 2000 files totalling > 30GB.

I was questioning this in one of their admin rooms and one of the admins started testing my winmx. He kept coming up with faulty readings, saying he was unable to get a response from my reported share port. I told him something was wrong on his end then because i had 3 or 4 files uploading and do so freely. He kept insisting I was using tricks to stop UpLoads. So I told him to try an actual upload. He switched to another computer and his file request connected immediately. He was left scratching his head. finally after a couple hours, he figured it out. The tests he had been running from his other computer which was showing dead ports on my end were wrong because HIS firewall was blocking replies!

But those were manual tests. However, if the machine with the test bot could also have some configuration or firewall issues also that makes it appear to have closed ports.

But the nature of the ban message indicates it is counting wrong. Some opennap servers filter by file type. I have often got a message sharing only 31 files from some video oriented servers, and that is all they give credit for. It matters not that you are sharing 2000 .ogg or PDF or .zip files. All they count are mpg and avi it seems for their purposes. And some i think just have broken counters for other reasons, maybe lag or something. It not you - its on the opennap server end.

My experience is that bunnymatrix servers are the biggest problem for wrong file share tests like you and I are experiencing.

The server software does it's own counting/crediting of users shared files list's.
And yes, It is true that some opennap servers are "genre and/or file specific" (IE: Video files only-
as an example) But again, that is up to the server operator's discretion as there are settings to allow/block specific filetypes, file sizes and the like.
These server operators run this software as a free service to users of compatible p2p clients. They do this on their own time, on their own computers, With their own internet connection (that they themselves pay for) There is no revenue that they receive. Nor any revenue generating side activities that I am aware of associated with running a OpenNap/SlavaNap server.
I therefore feel that they have every right to block and/or allow any type or size of files that they wish to. (I'm sure that some allow all filetypes) As far as getting banned, this is usually just a temporary thing on most networks. Many times, during a period of extra heavy traffic (other users logging on, searches, browses, ect some users may get mistakenly banned beacuse your shared files list failed to upload properly. If you did indeed meet the minimum requirement as far as number of shared files goes, I'd just try to log in again later on.

Hi all, can someone tell me how I clear a 'ban' on OpenNap? I switched my folders for about 30 seconds during which my file count dropped, and in that time I got banned!! Now its back to circa 3500, but still the ban stays in place. Thanks.
