In my belief this one is going to be an own goal for  those using it.

Executives at EMI Group on Monday said they planned to begin rolling out CDs with technology designed to limit copying. The technology allows buyers to burn onto CDs only three full copies of a disc's songs, and the burned discs cannot be copied.

Sony BMG is heading even faster down the same road. About half the discs it releases in the United States today have the three-copy limit, and it plans to have a similar restriction on all its U.S. releases by the end of the year, said Thomas Hesse, president of the company's global digital music business.

The new CD technology still has some compatibility issues — most notably, the songs on the discs cannot be transferred directly to Apple Computer Inc.'s popular iPods. Such limitations are one reason that the two other major record companies, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group Corp., have yet to make the switch to "secure" CDs.

once again your paying your dollars and your losing your lawful right to make a "fair use copy" of the disk,  a great "thank you" for making an honest purchase.

These are the same folks who get the biggest cut of the poor quality "legal downloads" market from the services they licence; and then while crying that file sharers are making them lose money they (after craftily not adding the legal download figures in with the others) declare CD sales are slumping while pointing to figures from many years ago , last year they had a boom year, and its the same old greedy companies we have to thank for this situation.

Will they never learn, fair pay for fair play.

well, I've always had a plan for copying disks that they can't stop with any CD protection. well, they could, but then you also wouldn't be able to listen to the CD.
Plug your stereo into the PC with an RCA audio cable (or whatever it's called) then use a program to record the songs. it would take more time, and maybe not rip full quality songs, but they still can't do anything about it :-)
Anything that can be read, can also be copied  :D

Well my first though on the matter is to remember that places like France have said if they charge a blank media levy they are not entitled to get paid twice, and made putting protection on the versions sold there illegal, maybe we should all look into obtaining anything we want by importing it from France

so, instead of beer people will start smuggling CD's?

or you could just download backup copies of all of your legally purchased media :-)

Sony/BMG are rapidly trying to saturate the market with useless CD,s , to what end ?

Sony BMG, the world's second-largest music company, is rolling out CDs with new technology that serves as a "speed bump" to hinder people who want to make illicit copies.
Users will be allowed to make three additional CD copies for their own use and to store the music files on their computer in a protected format from Microsoft.

So let me get this right, we pay our hard earned cash, then they allow us to make a really lousy quality DRM protected version, that would sound like crap, but only 3 times

Who is smoking what ..    :?

Folks you have a legal right to return a CD not complying to the published red book audio cd standard, and the cd logo means it does so, if you get one of these useless frisbees, take it back and demand a refund, and if they refuse threaten to sue under the false advertising statutes in your country.
See the links below to view some details of the standard.

An exhaustive new study is estimating that the digital rights management industry will grow from $600 million worldwide in 2004 to $1.9 billion in 2009.
The DTC study, which is set to be unveiled Monday, also profiles more than 20 companies destined to benefit from the money that will be spent to protect digitally delivered content, including ContentGuard, Entriq Inc., Intertrust Technologies Corp., Macrovision, News Corp.-controlled NDS Group and Microsoft Corp.

The fat get fatter and the consumer is ripped off, whats new ?

I hope folks remember these companies for the intellectual property parasites they are.
