Alert ! Bot.exe
« on: February 26, 2006, 02:49:37 am »
Folks some lamer has been trying to get people to download a virus called bot.exe, nothing new in this sort of activity but today they have stepped up the activity by uploading it to Cricketmx, abusing the system there that the webmaster allows for new releases and programs to be shared amongst the community.

http://forums.cricketmx.com/viewtopic.php?t=2705

The user called themselves Tech87.

Please be vigilant in only downloading items from legitimate sites who are able to guarantee that the files are unmodified and as released.

I will be making further enquiries regarding this matter, but please do not accept small programs from strange sources, and never run a program without virus scanning it first for malicous content.

Cheers to "P2P" for the heads up  8)

Thank you, I have been aware of this virus on a personal level. and I remind all users to SCAN their downloads before attempting to open them- perhaps create a folder just for downloads.  Attacking webmaster is not unusual but ty just the same for the Heads up !!   data out for now.

Can someone help me to be sure i'm not still infected by it?I deleted the bot.exe file and scanned my PC with AVG7  on my PC and also did a online virus scan both test said I was virus free.

on a related note, today winmxworld started allowing people to add attachments to their posts... lol, talk about good timing :-)

oh well, we have good moderators so it shouldn't be a problem here like it is on some other forums

Greetings !,

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

is a online virus scanner that can catch and take care of  bot.exe.  It is a very thoruogh virus scanner , maybe too thorough!, I suggest you use the setting to not delete instantly when it finds something and let a person manually remove the files it finds.  Thank you and keep the network alive folks !

no virus scan will pick it up, av's can only pick up what they have been programmed to detect.,
and as the virus was only made 5 days ago it will be undetectable

Some antiviruses update daily.

Also you have to watch sending people viruses because you can get into alot of trouble. They can report you to your ISP and your ISP can deny you service. I would watch next time.

Well let me be the first to say..'That makes all the difference in the world'... I mean just ask President Bush.. he didnt bomb Iraq either.. he just ordered it.

I know several folks Michael that are capable of, and do write viruses.. the difference is they dont accidentally hand them out to idiots for mass production, so what was the point?
Then you come into the channel complaining about being infected.. I dont like liars  Michael.. its no way to gain any respect from anyone except other liars!

Your gone for months and this is what you came back to MX to do?

<insert massively disappointed emoticon here>

me here says:Well let me be the first to say..'That makes all the difference in the world' Rolling Eyes... I mean just ask President Bush.. he didnt bomb Iraq either.. he just ordered it.

i didnt order anyone to do it .  look at it different, km wrote mcs  people exploited mcs to flood the wpn     i wrote harding virus  someone "Tech87" exploited that to use against other winmx users.

Oh.. so you wrote a perfectly safe program to .. ermm.. chat with or something .. and this tech person reworked it making it a virus.. then you came into our room because your program to chat with had become a virus and you downloaded it and got infected?  Is that what your telling me..

Do you also have swamp land in Arizona for sale by chance..??

i  wrote harding virus  just to see if i was capable, there was no intention of releasing it to winmx users, and i do apologise that it happened.

but trying to be smart "Me Here" Realy dont suit u , i mean it took JOSH of all people to twig lol

another example then if mcs was not good enough,  how about Chat attack , was that made for the good intentions of winmx users?????  did km release it?????  i believe  both of those answers will match the response of me writing harding virus....

It would appear to me "Michael" that smart is not Your strong suit either.
First of all this is all you had to say in the first place, instead of apologizing you had to come here bragging about how AV wont find it, and came to the room acting like some unsuspecting victim.
Second of all P2P was the one that brought this to our attentions not Josh, because we already knew that you were more than likely the author. Not that many folks use the name harding on their programs..

So lets not get into some insult contest here..I can understand you wrote it and dont fault you for that, I just like honest folks Michael, your correct I dont show alot of respect to those that arent.
I do appreciate the apology.. lets leave it at that..
