I would suggest you use the 2.2 patch, then you wont need to run the pglite for Winmx, because the patch already has the blocking in it.

As for your IP in the router you can set a static IP for it fairly simply:

Hi me here. I know your VERY busy but i think now i need some serious tech help. I'm connecting on secondary but some i'll get qued and then the waiting for reply before it turns red. Then others is just waiting for reply and then red. I did the whole port thing, changed from automatic to static ip, went into winmx and it seemed like it froze. I totally know this is asking alot but would you help me from scratch, tell me what i should delete,what to keep,where to put it and what to download. I just don't know why i can't get my router to go through primary. Please do ask me questions about my laptop so you know what's on my system. Since i have the required winmx stuff on my system, we'll start by deleting i guess. Please help me. I really want this to work and also on primary if possible. Also, my online time keeps cutting off constantly.

Ok Mman,

Starting from scrath would also include reinstalling WinMx for your operating system from here:

Make your installation for XP, Winmx v. 3.54 beta 4.

Once you have this downloaded I want you to go ahead with the installation, when it gets to the TCP connection test, and the UDP connection test I want you to stop the test and click the Configure Manually button.
On the first box 'Outgoing TCP Connections' Leave it as is and say 'Ok'.
The next box is 'Incoming TCP Connections' set this to port 6699 and tick that top option.
The next box is 'IN/OUT UDP Connections' set this to port 6257 and tick that top option.

Now allow the WinMx to finish installing according to your liking.

Now make sure that your XP firewall has WinMx allowed for port 6699 TCP and 6257 UDP. If you dont usually use the XP firewall just go ahead and verify that its off at this time.

Also look at Norton Again and make sure its got WinMx listed to permit all in the Worm Protection again.

That is the best I can advice without knowing the name and model of your router. If you would like to get me that I can write you a bit about it to make sure you have that set correctly. As I mentioned before thats usually the culprit in these matters for some reason or another.

From what you have posted so far it sounds like you are on a Cable Internet connection with a Cable modem, but you have mentioned dsl.

The reason this is important is lets just say you actually have a dsl internet connection via phone line, many of the modems for these have NAT capabilities.. meaning they can act as a router. If you also have a router hooked up separately.. then the two conflict. So one has to be set up differently to allow the other to work.. so again i ask you about explaining this to me better.

Yes I am alive.. even I get a few hours off someday..

Ok Cox Cable is filtering and throttling p2p .. so that is not great news and could be part of your problems too.. It may mean that we are going to change the port numbers we used earlier.. For now I just want you to continue your work with the ports we used.

I need you to make sure your on the computer or laptop which ever you are trying to forward the ports for and do this:
Go to Start > Run > type in cmd.. then click OK
Now in the box type ipconfig .. then click Enter.
There will be several numbers you shall see, write down the Default IP Address.

Go here and make sure that you have set up two rules correctly according to these instructions:

Set two rules for your router for the computer you are planning to use for WinMx
One for UDP and one for TCP protocol.

Once this is done you should be able to maintain a Primary on WinMx.

me here, so you want me to use the default gateway for all the lines that have an ip address in my router? Do i keep obtain automatically checked and how about the dns stuff. So far, i have udp and tcp boxes enabled with my default gateway and under setup, my ip is default gateway also. Then i opened winmx and my s=0.

No the Gateway address is the address to access the router. It wont work for forwarding the rules.
Although you will notice they are similar numbers the ones you want to use in that space for your rule is your 'Default IP Address'

Not your Default Gateway Address.

me here, ok, this is what i've done. In my router under setup, I have obtain an ip automatically, local ip is the same as the one in ip config, have subnet mask from ip config, local dhcp in router disabled. My port ranges are set with the default winmx numbers and the ip address in my router is my default gateway address from ip config and i have them enabled. Get back with me. Thanx.

Thats great!! S=1 should raise tho to a number more like 10 or more even..
With this you should be good to go for searches and room lists.. and should have a more stable connection.

I have the 2.2 patch thingy which runs the 3.54 beta. I guess that's all i have. Do you recommend any others or will this be all i need for security reasons. Get back with me.

The 2.2 Patch already blocks the RIAA IPs that you need to keep them off of the network, its more for protecting the network then your self as much, but its good for all.

So the answer is no, at this time I would say your doing all you need, go out there and enjoy MX..

Best settings for Faster Downloads:

1. Auto Enter Que:
AEQ, stands for Auto Enter Que, its a good idea to have the AEQ, set to 100.
To set the AEQ level in WinMx go to Settings > Internet Connection > Search.
Click on Auto Enter Que and choose 100.

2. Auto Find Sources:
AFS, stands for Auto Find Sources, its best to have the AFS, set to 10.
To set the AFS level in WinMx go to Settings > Internet Connection > Search.
Click on Auto Find Sources and choose 10.

3. Time Out Settings:
Go to Settings > File Transfers > Make sure the times there are set to 60, 600, 300 on the rest, especially the bottom four time options should be set to 300.

4. Bandwidth:
For information on what your specific bandwidth settings should be, visit our interactive bandwidth test page below.

5. Allocated Bandwidth:
Allocated bandwidth is a primary user setting that allows you to increase and lower the amount of bandwidth WinMx will use for WPN traffic.
You can find this setting by going to Settings > WinMX Peer Network > on the right you will see Allocated Bandwidth.
Best settings for this on Cable/DSL is 9 KB/s Out and 13.5 KB/s In.
Now under that setting is Thread Duty Cycle, set this to 40%.

Now as for the leeches (folks not sharing) the best thing to do is to run a upload manager such as MxMonitor or Leechammer.

You only need to choose one of these then follow the directions for installation and use. This will monitor your Que and make sure they have files shared before it allows them to get your files.
