WinMX Crashing:
« on: May 02, 2005, 11:25:27 am »
There has been a increase in the number of people we are seeing lately for help whose WinMX is crashing.  There may be many reasons this can happen.
Our suggestions are these:

1) Frist make sure you have the latest version of WinMX, this is the WinMX v3.54 beta 4.  If you curently have that v3.53 a fresh install of it is recommended.  (As you will keep you 3.53 on the machine and replace the Beta 4 WinMX.exe with the old one.)

2) Dont run any Add-On programs such as, Bots, Chat Clients, plugins, or Colour toys for a few days.  Make sure these are not causing interference for any reason.

3) Most important is to good antivirus, antispyware, and antiadware programs in Safe Mode.  We recommend

Adaware
Spybot Search & Destroy
AVG Anitvirus if you need Anitvirus.

If you dont already have these grab them and install them and reboot your machine into Safe Mode to run the scans.

Doing these steps has helped some people with this however if you continue to see this problem please make a post HERE  along with your information asked for below.  This problem is under investigation

Please let us know any relevant details that may help us to help you, such as:
- If you are getting an Error please DO NOT SEND, however please take note of the details of that error, by clicking "show details".  Saving this to notepad could prove helpful.
- Operating system                 (Windows 98/Me/2000/XP)
* Note please specify if you have SP1 or SP2 installed with XP*

- Internet connection type         (DSL/cable/dial up(56k))
- WinMx Version                    (3.31/3.35/3.54)
- Secondary or primary user

- What make of firewall you have
- Router brand and model
- Any WinMx add-ons installed      (Bots/Clients/Moni/Leechhammer)
- Any other applications or services running.

- Any results of scans you have done or changes made to the computer.
- Any Information you feel might be relevant to this problem.

Thanks for helping us to help you...

Adding on to what you have posted here Me, there seems to be 2 sorts of crashes currently, those that require a reinstallation and those that just crash
after trying to access some portion of the program that does not exist (buffer overflow).

To gather more details and help us with the problem that is being reported on a few forums now, please post the information on the following file contents here, so it can be added to the data available already.
Look in  C:Documents and Settings\your username here\Local Settings \Temp\ XXXXappcompat.txt (XXXX=a set of 4 letters or numbers)
You can use notepad to open them up and see whats inside, please only post ones that mention Winmx.exe

With the reloading type of problem I believe it has something to do with a corruption of the settings.dat file as this stores all the information WinMx requires to operate, not sure yet how this is occuring but its getting more common and so warrants attention.
